I've been having some huge performance problems with my Matrix Synapse server and I think that might be related to me joining the Synapse Admins room (15k members). I already tried leaving the room again through FluffyChat (which runs into a "Oops something went wrong" error) and then via matrix-nio for python calling the API, that call goes through successfully but returns a 504 Gateway Timeout...what else can I do? Can I just delete the room from the DB? #matrix #matrixsynapse #synapse

Just spent 6 hours trying find out and solve why my Matrix instance is showing: {"errcode":"M_NOT_FOUND","error":"Not found"} when trying to access images. I did not notice this problem before, because Matrix/Element caches images locally using blobs, but realized this after uploading images to IRC via heisenbridge.
I first thought I had messed up my S3 Object Storage. Then thought I messed up my filesystem. Then I thought I made a mistake in yaml configs. But it was none of that.
It's a while since I installed my Matrix server and completely forgot on how I set up my S3 Object Storage. It seems it is literally not documented. Like at all. Just like the half of Matrix and Synapse.
I ended up debugging literally anything and everything without any solution. After turning all stones I even asked ChatGPT and it started to run in loops in despair. Finally ended up reading synapse changelog here one bit by bit: https://element-hq.github.io/synapse/latest/upgrade.html#authenticated-media-is-now-enforced-by-default
It seems, I have upgraded in some point. And wow, in between of upgrades the whole thing has broken. I mean it runs without erros, but it's broken. No deprecated warnings in the log, no warnings in release logs. Left a comment here: https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/pull/17889#issuecomment-2564520513
My solution was to add in homeserver.yaml:
enable_authenticated_media: false
What I hate about Matrix is:
- Nothing is documented
- Nothing is explained
- Everything is complicated to set up
Each upgrade and extension is like building and tinkering for hours and hours and hoping for the best.
I don't know why I keep using Matrix. Guess I like being hurt all the time.
I'm in favor of @matrix turning on authenticated media ecosystem-wide - I really am - but it's pretty disappointing that they didn't coordinate with the Debian maintainers to make sure a backported Synapse version with this endpoint implemented was ready.
now I have to backport a package myself, something I absolutely have less than zero time to do.

#MatrixSynapse is making me sick ...
I had a working setup with 2 workers since ages. But now all of a sudden the federation worker began to ... stop working? freeze? I don't know. Observing the log didn't help me at all.
Consequence was that I could still send messages but didn't receive any and then the whole instance stopped working in the end. No connect with any client.
It's a docker setup and so I just wanted to docker-compose down everything as I use to do when s.th. wrong - e.g. after an automatic pull of updated images that didn't went smoothely.
But the federation container isn't stoppable or killable at all. Tried everything from docker-compose down to docker stop and kill - Nothing helps except of stopping and starting the whole docker Service of the station.
Now I have just taken the federation worker out of my setup - as it's anyways overheaded for 5-6 accounts with the to workers I guess. Now the instance seems to work smoothely again - without the federation worker.
But: Is there any way to kill this damn federation_worker container other than restarting the whole docker service?! (Ok. Would probably be the last time now, but generally spoken ...)
I wished I could just migrate to dendrite finally 😮💨 Maybe I just do it over the holydays and burry the synapse setup. Guess I shouldn't use the same tld but a new subdomain then for not to break the federation? At least that's important as far as fediverse instances are concerned I remember.
