#MothMonday

Damn, that was a lot of work. Having to figure out how to use Excel, was....challenging😅
1264 lines and 10+ columns.
Last year, I did a season of moth trapping at a local preserve. I have been compiling an Excel sheet with Binomial name, Common name, Host plant, Habitat, Location, Date, Time, Temperature, Red list status, and on top of that, a folder with pictures of every moth I found there, and a folder of the best pictures I have of those species..
The Nature guides asked for as much information as possible to use for education and habitat improvements.
I'll hold on to it and tweak it for a few more days, have a fellow moth man take a look to find errors, and then send it.

We were very lucky to come across this mating Cecropia Moths. Lacking both functional mouth parts and digestive system, they live for only 14 days.Their sole purpose is to mate and lay eggs. frametoframe.ca/cecropia-moths

This one was tricky to ID, but I'm at least 75% sure that it's a northern eudeilinia (𝘌𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘢). From the WIley Trails:

A small white moth with fringed wing edges, perched on a serrated green leaf. A fingertip can be seen holding the leaf down to reveal the moth.

Four from today 🔎

2025-04-28

A warm day yesterday but a chilly night, and just three #moth visitors which was rather disappointing numerically, though all three were first sightings in 2025. Hopefully some warmer nights this week will help numbers. Three to stimulate your intellectualities today are:

1) & 2) Flame Shoulder
3) Pale Mottled Willow
4) Oak Tree Pug

Overhead shot of 1cm Flame Shoulder moth on a finger. It is oblong shape. It is dark brown with a silvery-gold "go faster" stripe down each wing edge from the shoulder to about two-thirds of the way down before it tapers out, hence its name, flame shoulder. It also has two small stigmata on each wing, one silvery-white oval above a silvery-white reniform/kidney shaped mark.Side on shot of a 1cm Flame Shoulder moth. It faces right. It is dark brown with a silvery-gold flame running down the wing edge. There are two stigmata visible, one silvery-white oval and one reniform.A rather plain looking 1cm moth on the bottom of a finger facing the palm. It is a dusty/peppery sandy brown colour, with a faint, thin, jagged brown line running horizontally about a third of the way down. It has two stigmata on each wing. One tiny oval and one reniform, both of which a mid-brown. There is a slightly thicker jagged brown line running horizontally towards the bottom of the wing. It has two thin antennae pointing left and right from its headA flat 1 cm pug moth on a wall. It wings are outstretched so it is much wider than it is tall. Difficult to describe but it's colouring resembles a tabby cat with broken and intermittent stripes/bands of dark brown, beige and patches of grey. It has a thin, short abdomen with two pinhead eyes.

For #MothMonday I present Nessus Sphinx (Amphion floridensis). I have soft spot for Sphinx (aka Hawk) Moths - their pollination relationship with flowers is pretty cool. Ok I may be biased given it was the subject of my masters thesis, but still.
#moth #insect #lepidoptera #manitoba #sphingidae

A fair sized moth alternating black and grey bands across its wings and body, with a pale yellow band part way down and a tuft of brown "hair" immediately behind its head.
