#PCMCIA

@Natanox @qlp @wyatt also both designs (#XJACK and #Flap) are horrible cuz noone will complain about a knob at the end of a #PCMCIA card.

  • Espechally since it'll make it more janky and consume more space than a (detachable) #dongle-cable.

@wyatt Yikes!

Now I know how they called these so manufacturers didn't have to bother to build either a knob at the end of their #PCMCIA cards or add a (ideally detachable) cable and socket to it.

Нас ждут дальнейшие приключения, возможно успешные: приехал адаптер #CompactFlash#PCMCIA
Жаль, что у #eMate300 только один слот: или #WiFi, или flash 😩
На крайний случай в хозяйстве есть ещё два ноутбука с #PCcard

I saw it somewhere in the 90s and I just remember #PCMCIA as "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms". (tev)

*shakes the card at those dang kids passing his house*

You dang kids have no idea how easy you have it with integrated WIFI on your iPad and phones!! In my day we had #PCMCIA cards on our 10lbs laptops!!! (Actually my first WIFI was a PCI card for my desktop.)

I was digging through my tech junk drawer looking for my Pebble charging cable and found this. This thing brings back the memories. I use to do a ton of #wardriving . I never accessed an AP but did scan for them. I legit drove around the twin cities to the point that back in day of 2003, I collected 4,401 AP's with GPS details. Today? That isn't even a 5 mile radius. But in 2003. It was a lot.

Neil Cafferkey has developed a SANA-II-compatible network card driver for PCMCIA cards from the manufacturer Xircom, which can be used with an A600 or A1200:

It's a bit of a shame that my #laptop 's #PCMCIA slot has never and will never be used.

Those #Framework USB-C cartridges look like they're the new PCMCIA, but other laptop manufacturers don't seem to be on board for some reason. I wonder why? Is the design patented or something?

@scruss No I don't think so, #PCMCIA is pretty-much just the ISA bus broken out into a 68pin connector with some extra stuff. I think #Psion was just mad because their hardware didn't have ISA, and they didn't want to implement it.

Architectural openness

Possibly the most significant point of all still remains to be made. Namely, the SSD interface makes no presumption on the architecture of the system that is driving it - unlike PCMCIA which is designed for PC-hardware compatible systems. This gives the designer of the system considerably greater freedom: SSDs are truly independent of the host system.

To re-emphasise: SSDs do not presuppose the Epoc or Sibosdk architectures in any way. The interface to SSDs is actually extremely flexible, and can be addressed:

 * via hardware, using an ASIC-2 card, or
 * via software, using just two microprocessor i/0 lines.

Finally, two further points, each emphasising the greater flexibility offered by SSDs to system designers:

 * at the level of engineering layout, SSDs can be located significantly further away from the main processor than PCMCIA cards (by virtue of the different interfaces)
 * there is no intrinsic design constraint to the address limit of SSDs, providing potentially unlimited capacity.

#psion really, really hated #PCMCIA

There's two whole pages dedicated to hating it in the SDK docs.

PCMCIA is just hype!

#retrocomputing

Screenshot of the Psion 'C' Software Development Kit Volume 1.

Certain manufacturers of hand-held computers have recently been vigorously promoting the so-called PCMCIA standard for plug-in cards for portable computers. The idea is that PCMCIA cards that can plug into one hand-held computer ought to be able to plug just as easily into another.

However, the SSDs used in SIBO computers do not conform to this standard. This fact may be seen as a potential problem - possibly as a disincentive against taking the time to learn how to program within the Sibosdk system. More precisely, it may be seen as a reason why the SIBO range of computers might enjoy but a limited lifetime in the marketplace, before being eclipsed by other, PCMCIA-based portable computers - in which case, studying the Sibosdk system in any detail would be a poor investment.

This chapter aims to answer these worries by dispelling the hype around PCMCIA, through documenting some of the considerable benefits of SSDs as compared to PCMCIA cards.

Oh wow, did the people from #psion hire clairvoyants in 1990! This is exactly what happened with #PCMCIA and the Psion Serial Protocol!

ADDITIONAL SYSTEM INFORMATION

It seems more than likely that the Psion Serial Protocol will also become a de-facto industry standard, alongside the PCMCIA standard. Just as various different computers, from a variety of manufacturers, currently contain PCMCIA card slots, so too will SSDs become incorporated in an ever wider range of computers and computer peripherals. (But it should be borne in mind that there are already not one but three different PCMCIA standards, whereas there is only one Psion Serial Protocol standard.)

Well, my first two #aliexpress experiences were shite.
I ordered an #expresscard to #pcmcia adapter - the shipping took forever, they could not find the address, and when it did arrive I received a Novatel #Wireless XCA-3 ExpressCard to PC Card Adapter. This card is only compatible with Novatel Wireless Products - no joy with other ExpressCards. Oh, they may show up in #Win10 but will not be identified correctly, use the wrong drivers, and will not work = worthless.
I liked how the expresscard was offset in the adapter, rather than in the middle. This is why I purchased it, to allow access for the second expresscard inserted in my #thinkpad
Thankfully, full refund & no need to ship back - donate/recycle.
The second was a purchase of a Tail Insertion Tester. After a week they canceled the order - and the replacement they offered to purchase at 2x the price!

When #thrifting the other day I ran across a mysterious PCMCIA card.

There's a no ports on the back of it, and it comes with a faux leather carrying case. What is it?

Put your guesses below, answer in the next post in a spoiler tag!

This "ez-dock" is not so easy - in fact I think it is #DOA. Been #troubleshooting this issue all weekend where the doc and the drive were not accessible.

The Unknown, new to me #PCMCIA/ pc card that has no #windoz10 drivers - Silicon Image SiI #3512 serial ATA controller providing two #eSATA ports that I was hoping to use for hard drive testing.

Took it as an opportunity to throw #Linux on this #t43 #ibm #thinkpad - decided on #MX running #fluxbox which seems to run rather well on this #vintagehardware and limited #RAM

Initially the eSATA card would light up, then would go dark with no visibility onto the drive media. Figured out how to configure #automount and tested with a different drive dock - and we have success! Confirmed the #pcmcia card works, and this other #unitek drive dock works! 😸

Tried the ez-dock via #USB and still no joy. Such a finicky #pos

@cannibal

I'm bringing back there two #Lenovo #Thinkpads: an #R400 & a #W500. Both are curb finds - scrounge some power supplies, they both booted up fine. Ordered a battery to replace the missing one on the R400 and the #SODIMM upgrades that I did not already have on hand to max out the memory on both. Also ordered a #PCMCIA card to add #eSATA and one for #USB3 capabilities for my drive docks.

The R400 is running #Win10 32 bit just fine, the W500 is next. Yea, #windoz for some hard drive testing software that only runs on #windowz 😞

The #T45 is next with a lightweight #Linux or #BSD distro. Pictures & updates on a future #makeshitmonday
