The #fingerprintreader on both of my #Thinkpads is #dysfunctional in #Linux #Mint. Known problem for quite some time.
I cannot say that I am amused.

After watching Action Retro's recent video, I'm now on a mission to make myself a 486SX-compatible #Linux 'distro'. I started with FLOPPINUX, but affording myself some luxuries like networking, nano, ftp, ssh, etc. I'm *hoping* to make something that will allow me to work from my early #ThinkPads!
Ich repariere und upgrade schon sehr lange Thinkpads, aber ich habe noch nie vorher diese elegante Lösung gesehen, aus einer msata half card eine mit kompletter Länge zu machen. Einfach aufstecken und anschrauben. 💜
Speaking from personal experience: YES.
Current collection:
X200t: OpenBSD
X260: FreeBSD
X390 Yoga: Fedora KDE (for now 😂)
Grabbed a #Lenovo #Ideapad C330 (#Chromebook) from my local #ewaste facility, looking to log into certain #Google Workspace accounts without providing a footprint on an actual #PC. And in the future when no longer supported install #Debian on it.
Also: this Chromebook folds to a tablet.
Unfortunately, the battery never fully charges: solid red for a few hours, then blinking red LED. I can get it to boot, but it will stay on for just a few minutes and then dies. Leaving it charging overnight, I was able to get logged in and started the upgrade for #ChromeOS 105.0.5195.134 (32 Bit), got the reboot and then it died. Left it unplugged, and there is no juice at all.
I found replacement batteries for $5 and up on #ebay, $10 plus shipping on gotlaptopparts.com, and stupid prices elsewhere. My concern is that it is not the battery but the circuits that managing charging the battery (which I would consider beyond repair and take back to eddies).
Via https://cros.tech/device/maple/ it looks as this Chromebook will support ChromeOS 143.0.7499.46, so there should still be some life in this device if the power issue is addressed.
Anything I’m missing here/not considering? Worth getting that cheap assed ebay battery and giving it a try?

Why has lenovo decided to make fixing their newer model thinkpads so difficult. ugh. For example the T14 uses adhesives for the monitor and it's bezel? and the old bezel needs to be pulled so hard that it requires full replacement.
Much more difficult compared to the T480s that has a bezel that can be taken off without breaking it and 4 screws for the LCD panel.
Dam, spoke too soon. This #thinkpad #P70 running #Win11 #LTSC decided to shit the bed overnight. I was using it last night to organize #ROMs, closed lid should have hibernated. Tried to start it up today, get #BIOS test screen and then a quick flash of text, then a black screen. Tried booting into advanced recovery mode, unable to get it to work with the holding the power button 3x, so I try to boot with my win11 LTSC install USB and get the same black screen....
I picked this up a few months back. Intel xeon i7 2.66 with 64 GB RAM, primary storage is a Samsung M2 which is showing up in the boot BIOS and as a boot-able device in the BIOS.
As posted previously, I was having some weird USB issues over the weekend when I was moving ROM collection file to external SSDs for archiving, but I had attributed to the #SSD in the external #USB sleds that was/has now failed. Man, it would bite of the controller chips on this #motherboard are failing.
Thankfully I had already moved all my job hunting notes & stuff to a different laptop, but all the ROM and #hakchi2 stuff is on this #laptop
Just in case, I started the #Lenovo diag mode to confirm hardware was ok when the battery died (I swear I had it plugged in). Now this POS will not even go into Diag mode.
Any thoughts on next steps for getting this Thinkpad booting again?
Any chance I can take the storage out of this and put it in a comparable P70 I have? and it will boot & let me log in?

There are reasons why I keep coming back to #thinkpads ...

My #trans daughter's #trans girlfriend came to me for advice on how to migrate from Windows to #linux.
I gave her a stack of old #thinkpads to experiment on
Does this count as grooming?
Es war mir eine Freunde, mit dem wunderbaren @stdevel gleich zwei Podcastfolgen aufzunehmen. In den Digitalen Anomalien sprechen wir über eine #ThinkPads

This might not look like much but remarkably it's a ThinkPad X230 using an RLCD display (Pixel Qi PQ3Qi-01 N101L8-L01)
How this never took off I'll never know, it looks superb!

I’m looking for a Thinkpad W520 or any Thinkpad with at least 500GB hard drive, and most importantly it needs.. FireWire, specifically the Texas Instruments chipset (so no T510, etc)
Anyone got one??
An eink-esque ThinkPad!? Sign me up! I’ve already ordered all the parts to try this mod (with the exception of the 3D printed bezel because I have no idea how that works). Let’s see how this goes!
@alina #thinkpads FTW
@eugenialoli not even #refurbished #ThinkPads?
I have Thinkpad T470s on which I need to unplug the battery each time I power if off, or it doesnt charge (the led blink when I unplug the cable, instead of when I plug it in). Once I removed/put back the battery, its fully working. Any idea ?

Damit bleibt er drauf ;-)
Vintage computers’ check-up continues. Thankfully, my second-favourite ThinkPad — the X61T — is in good health, as is its battery. I last used it in March, and when I checked the battery charge after booting, the system said it was at 84%. Windows 7 Pro seems to be a good fit for this 2007 machine.
Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 (1.60GHz), 4GB RAM, 256GB SSD. Once again, an SSD makes a difference on machines of this vintage, and reduces battery consumption.
