@mroach this has some #Dreamcast #VMU #vibes.

I hooe someone can build something new like that with like a an #ExpressCard/34 or ExpressCard/54 connector and #eInk screen...

@enigmatico @lispi314 @kimapr @bunnybeam case in point:

  • #Bloatedness was the original post topic and yes, due to #TechBros "#BuildFastBreakThings" mentality, #Bloatware is increasing given that a shitty bloated 50+MB "#WebApp" with like nw.js is easy to slap together (and yes I did so myself!) than to put in way more thought and effort (as you can see on the slow progression of OS/1337...

  • Yes, #Accessibility is something that needs to be taken more seriously and it's good to see that there's at least some attemots at making #accessibility mandatory (at least in #Germany, where I know from some insider that a big telco is investing a lot in that!) for a growng number of industries and websites...

  • And whilst one can slap an #RTX5090 on any laptop that has a fully-functional #ExpressCard slot (with #PCIe interface, using some janky adaptors!) that'll certainly not make sense beyond some #CUDA or other #GPGPU-style workloads as it's bottlenecked to a single PCIe lane of 2.0 (500MB/s) or just 1.0a(250MB/s) speeds.

Needless to say there is a need to THINN DOWN things cuz the current speed of #Enshittifcation and bloatedness combined with #AntiRepairDesign and overpriced yet worse #tech in general makes it unsustainable for an ever increasing population!

  • Not everyone wants (or even can!) indebt themselves just to have a phone or laptop!

Should we aim for more "#FrugslComputing"?

  • Abdolutely!

Is it realistic to expect things to be in a perfectly accessible TUI that ebery screenreader can handle?

  • No!

That being said the apathy of consumers is real, and very frustrating:

People get nudged into accepting all the bs and it really pisses me off because they want me to look like ab outsider / asshole for not submitting to #consumerism and #unsustainable shite...

The next #thinkpad on my #workbench is a #W510 – it has an #eSATA port as well as multiple #USB3 ports, #expresscard, #displayport, #smartcard, memory card reader, #DVD/#CDRW, with a max 16GM of #DDR3 #RAM so it can run #Win11 (if you are careful) or #linux with ease. This will be a good replacement for my workbench laptop for testing and #wiping #HardDrives and #SSDs

But: the processor is only an i7-Q720 1.6 Ghz
This will be a dog with #Windoz

So I am researching which & where to get a #CPU upgrade.
According to #thinkwiki thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:W5 Some models came with an Intel Quad Core Extreme Processor i7-920XM (2.0GHz 1333MHz 8MB L3).

But wowzas the couple I found were expensive as all hell.

Any thoughts on
a) where to find one of these #CPUs at a reasonable cost; possibly locally in the SF bay area?
b) Is/are there other #CPUs that would work in the W510 motherboard that would provide more bang for the buck?

TIA!

@ustralien Sadly no, and that's my big disappointment!

@frameworkcomputer decided to choose the #Apple-esque "flat cells below #trackpad" design in the unreasonable #THINN-ness race instead of doing what even the #EeePC and #Sony's #Vaio #P11Z did and have a slot at the back to chug in batteries!

  • I know why they did it, as a closed aluminium pan aka. "#lunchbox" design is easier to fabricate, but I'd rather some #ToolfreeSwappableBattery which are IMHO of more practicality than having the ability to swap out every port.

Not that I don't like those #modules, but I'd rather wish for a "#THICC-er" device if that gets me essentials like #Ethernet, #USB-A & -C as well as a #TRRS #HeadphoneJack / #HeadsetJack.

That being said the #Framework is still by a long margin the "least #enshittified" device on the market, and same goes for the #Fairphone devices...

Not to mention they don't have an #UltraNav-Style #Trackpoint and I do use that instead of a Trackpad.

Which is a shame, since this T430s runs both 10 and 11 really well with the max #16GB of #RAM - it boots up in seconds with a #1TB #ssd I installed. The #keyboard has a nice feel to it (even with the chicklet keys), and is wide enough but not a surfboard wide. The #USB3 and the #expresscard ports let me use this for tech projects as well as the browsing and job hunting I am currently focused on.

I lost count the number of negative nancy's in these threads with the answer to throw it out / upgrade to something new - the hardware is over 10 years old, yadda yadda. 🙄 Clearly they are not familiar with us #vintagecomputing folks, nor familiar with using an item until it completely falls apart.

Well, my first two #aliexpress experiences were shite.
I ordered an #expresscard to #pcmcia adapter - the shipping took forever, they could not find the address, and when it did arrive I received a Novatel #Wireless XCA-3 ExpressCard to PC Card Adapter. This card is only compatible with Novatel Wireless Products - no joy with other ExpressCards. Oh, they may show up in #Win10 but will not be identified correctly, use the wrong drivers, and will not work = worthless.
I liked how the expresscard was offset in the adapter, rather than in the middle. This is why I purchased it, to allow access for the second expresscard inserted in my #thinkpad
Thankfully, full refund & no need to ship back - donate/recycle.
The second was a purchase of a Tail Insertion Tester. After a week they canceled the order - and the replacement they offered to purchase at 2x the price!

Success! found an "Sonnet Tempo SATA Express Card 34 with 2 eSATA Ports" over on #eBitch aka #eBay

A good seller experience - timely shipping, arrived promptly - packing could be better though, wrapped in a #walmart #wallyworld bag inside a cardboard box? 🤦‍♂️

The #Expresscard was auto-detected in #windows10 on the #lenovo #R400 as a "Silicon Image SiI 3132 #SATALink Controller", drivers were pulled from online and installed, and I was wiping an old hard drive in my #eSATA drive dock in minutes.

anyone have any #PCCARD #expresscard sitting around, hopefully for #eSATA or #usb3 ? I'm looking for some with a #vintagecomputing project currently on my #workbench - #IBM and #lenovo #thinkpads

Shopping for them online has been problematic... and there are none on #craigslist in my area.

@AlanyG21 @fuchsiii @foone So nothing but budget, time and soldering or at least layouting skills prevent one from slapping an #RM500Q onto an adaptor and roll withit.
quectel.com/product/5g-rm50xq-

In fact, there are #M2 adaptors for #ExpressCard made by #ThinkMods that do this, and personally I'd just take something like an #LTE-#USB Stick and wire it up to the USB lines...

@AlanyG21 @fuchsiii @foone Eeyupp...

There are basically passive adapters since #ExpressCard is just #PCIe 1.1-2.0 + #USB 2.0 or a hot-plug capable, external variant of #MiniPCIe aka. #MiniCard.

And OFC there are adaptors for that...

@josephholsten @fuchsiii @bastetfurry @gpuopen having a #GPU randomly go #braindead until reset is not only inacceptable, but inexcuseable!

This Laptop Gets All The PCIe Devices

Did you ever feel like your laptop's GPU was sub-optimal, or perhaps that your laptop could use a SAS controller? [Rob Rogers] felt like that too, so now he has the only Dell Latitude business-class laptop that's paired with an AMD RX580 GPU - and more. Made possible because of a PCIe link he hijacked from the WiFi card, he managed to get a SAS controller, a USB 3.0 expansion card, the aforementioned GPU and a dual-port server network adapter, all in a single, desk-top setup, as the video demonstrates.

First off, we see a PCIe packet switch board based on a PLX-made chip, wrapped in blue tape, splitting a single PCIe x1 link into eight. The traditional USB 3.0 cables carry the downstream x1 links to the four PCIe cards connected, all laid out on [Rob]'s desk. [Rob] demonstrates that all of the cards indeed function correctly - the SAS controller connected to a server backplane with whole 22 TB of storage in it, a few devices plugged into a USB 3.0 card, an Ethernet cable with an active link in the network card, and wrapping up the video showing 3DMark results of the RX580 clearly paired with the laptop's mobile CPU. There's four more spots on the PCIe switch card, so if you wanted to connect a few NVMe SSDs without the costly USB enclosures that usually entails, you absolutely could!

Now, there's a reason why we don't see more of such hacks. This seems to be a Latitude E5440 and the card is plugged into a mini-PCIe slot, which means the entire contraption is bound by a single PCI-E Gen2 x1 link, heavily offsetting the gains you'd get from an external GPU when, say, gaming. However, when it comes to the types and amount of peripherals, this is unbeatable - if you want to add an external GPU, high-speed networking and a SAS controller to the same computer that you usually lug around, there isn't really a dock station you can buy for that!

Our collection of cool PCIe hacks has been growing, with hackers adding external GPUs through ExpressCard and mini PCIe alike, fitting PCIe slots where the factory refused to provide one, and extending the onboard M.2 slots for full-size PCIe cards. Nowadays, with these packet switches, it's easy as ever to outfit any PCIe capable device with a whole slew of features - as this Raspberry Pi Computer Module motherboard with eleven PCIe slots demonstrates. Wonder how PCIe works, and why all of that is possible? We've written an entire article on that!

Hobby update: using my #lenovothinkpad T530, w/16gb ram as a test bed. It has a 512gb ssd, a 480gb ngff in the #wwan slot and a 200gb sdxc in the #expresscard slot. So far on the ssd, I have installed Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 7 pro w/VMware capabilities (all for giggles). I’ve also put Arch w/icewm and Slackware on it so far. My next plan is to put Gentoo on the ngff. I have it all setup on #grub and no issues so far. 1/2

2020-06-16

How come nobody thought it'd be useful to make #ExpressCard RAM cards?

So many machines around limited to 8GB in the chipset (including my T510) that'd benefit from putting tmpfs or zram swap on some more Gigs instead of burning SSDs for that…
