#Reciprocity

🧵 #GoodNews The news is some months old but I missed it: When the Times Magazine published its famous list of The 100 Most Influential People in 2025, #RobinWallKimmerer was among them! "During a time of tremendous #environmental fear and uncertainty, we have found, to our immeasurable relief, our master teacher." time.com/collections/100-most-
A relief for me that persons of such an #integrity and #decency influence our world. Despite being quiet they make an impact.

Normally I don't recommend links before I didn't read/checked them myself. But #natureWriter Robert MacFarlane recommended this #essay about the Eco-Cultural #Revitalization on the #Klamath. Text by Ben Goldfarb with photos by Kiliii Yüyan: emergencemagazine.org/essay/a-
And as a fan of him and @emergencemagazine I believe it is brillant and will read it later! (MacFarlane, Goldfarb, and #EmergenceMagazine are now on Bsky).

I love changing my #perspective by slipping into the most impossible roles. It helps me see everyday things with new eyes. When I became this cute little green #alien, this is the result:

Back and Cover of a mini-zine with a cute green cartoon alien, a little bit frog-like. Title: Reconnection for Aliens.2 pages inside the mini-zine. At the left the alien standing on a mini continent on a blue planet. Beside a rocket with the words "open your mind" and on the continent: "and trust yourself". At the right many small green aliens stand on bright blue mycelium, some take the hands of others. Text: share & connect!

My opinion - Foreign media in countries like #Australia, where this piece ran, shouldn't publish #Chinese government op-eds unless #China's state media publishes foreign diplomat op-eds.

#Reciprocity is a basic tenet of #diplomacy and should be enforced in the #digital and #media spaces.

Distressed friend demands help: Even support systems need clear boundaries. Demanding emotional labour without consent violates the Principle of Reciprocity and drains energy. We move from Corrupted Code (Force) to Clean Code (Power).

Scenario: A friend is in crisis and demands immediate emotional support late at night, despite repeated hints the recipient is busy. The friend replies:

❌ Corrupted Code (Force):
"I need to talk right now, I'm having a crisis. Just drop what you're doing, I can't handle this alone." (Demands immediate, non-consensual labor, ignoring the recipient's boundaries.)

✅ Clean Code (Power):
"I'm having a crisis and need support. Are you in a good space to talk for a few minutes now? If not, please let me know when might work for you tomorrow." (Asks for consent; respects the recipient's agency and energy.)

The difference? The second message respects the recipient’s energy system. What boundary can you clearly state today?

“All that you touch, you change.
All that you change changes you.”

Octavia Butler names the reciprocity we all live inside of — ecological, emotional, relational.
A reminder that transformation isn’t something we do to the world; we change with it.

Kimmerer’s reminder lands softly but precisely: restoration is empty without relationship. What lasts is the reciprocity we build with place — the ongoing, living exchange that outlives any single intervention.

I am considering this option in my life: the ability for people to pay me money, in return for my opinions and understandings. I believe this is part of the attention economy and the information and data economy, where engagement must be reciprocal and mutually beneficial. It seems that my attention and understanding are not yet widely sought after, so it makes sense to implement this.

Collapse is hitting our sector, and Ben names what many in purpose-driven work already feel: the old economy is thinning, and relational alternatives are emerging in the cracks.

Farmastery + Lifeboat Academy are prototypes of those alternatives. To get through this lean season, two supports matter:
• contributions
• consulting referrals for Ben

RE: mastodon.social/@Toadlyturtle/

Can we stop seeing as please? yes, transactional no. And we must allow that isn't always direct. Otherwise, are we not simply uplifting paradigms of value?

I keep seeing trends wherein those in pain, grieving or ill get dropped.

I know that I haven't uplifted as much, while ill and grieving and in many ways never have enough, but my loved ones are in danger and they need uplifted. Please!!

Hawken’s critique of GDP lands hard because it’s true:
we’ve normalised the extraction of the future and called it “growth.”

Witnessing this honestly is part of ecological grief — not to paralyse us, but to clarify the work ahead.
Peace, in this context, becomes a practice of repair, reciprocity, and community-scale regeneration.

Digesting Food Studies (the CFS podcast)—Episode 102: Teaching about Food Studies

rss.com/podcasts/digesting-foo

Learning about food and food systems goes way beyond classroom lectures, involving #power and #justice, #reciprocity and #listening, getting your hands into #soil and getting your heart in a roil. It’s a full mind-body experience!

This episode features Jennifer Sumner and Michael Classens, two leaders in critical teaching and learning about food systems—and guest editors of the Food Pedagogies issue of Canadian Food Studies (Vol. 8 No. 4)… Alexia Moyer explores the kinds of school environments that support food learning before post-secondary education, and in the “After Taste,” Eric Schofield responds to “Toward a Common Understanding of Food Literacy,” by Kimberley Hernandez, Doris Gillis, Kathleen Kevany, and Sara Kirk.

The question is, how will we return it?

A handful of earth.
A tree that stands by itself.
A hand that will one day be gone.

Hold on to what is good.

A social post from @lifeboatacademy which says:
"Hold on to what is good,
Even if it's a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe,
Even if it's a tree that stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do,
Even if it's a long way from here.
Hold on to your life,
Even if it's easier to let go.
Hold on to my hand,
Even if someday I'll be gone away from you".
