Wow, SpaceBar (formlery called "Fosscord") looks a lot like Discord.

SpaceBar is an open-source alternative to Discord.

I’m just hearing that two spaces after a full stop (period) is no longer the done thing, and I should be using just one. I’m not sure when this became the thing. What is your preference? #FullStop #SpaceBar #SpaceBar

@hierarchon so what?

Keys #F1-#F24 & #PF1-#PF12 are standardized and on a real 100% board like the #ModelM #Terminal & #Unicomp #PC122 you'll have these...

Alongsite with the usually misnamed #SuperKey, the #Copilot - #Key should've never been allowed or even implemented into existance!

Excerpt of a conversation between myself, and my girlfriend. She fights the good fight with the #technology . Meh. Something like that?

"Seems like that's the direction (web, phone apps, etc.) #software is going now.
#uiux #ui #ux
Essentially one familiar interface. Kind of the same with [the] #windows #Win11 [Desktop O/S].

A lot of it is familiar regardless of the app you're using. That's probably why you find yourself getting #confused about where and how to find #files on your #pc (e.g. where are my #photos ? where's my #resume ?) because it all looks so similar, if you don't know you specifically need to open a "file folder view", you might be lost because #Microsoft #edge is #maximized

The trade-off is the #convenience of that #systemwide #GlobalSearch that you access when you type the "Windows" key (that special key by the #spacebar)"

New contender for Smol Keybod:

"Realforce" made a #Japanese #Keyboard where the #spacebar is only 2 characters wide.

2 or 2.5 characters, positioned between 3.

Found some more on GeekHack and Quora. This page explains the Kana-Kanji conversion / no-conversion keys on either side of the spacebar: win.tue.nl/~aeb/linux/kbd/scan

That website has some detailed diagrams and explanations of the extra "shift" keys, but also the oldest IBM-PC-style example of a Japanese keyboard I could find. It has neither Apple's Command/Option keys to fight with, nor Windows 95's Windows/Context keys.

All jealous users of spacebar's ample generosity.

A standard JIS keyboard without the numpad - RealForce brand, 21st century, white case and white keys except mid-grey keys for anything that isn't alphanumeric (or F1-F4 and F9-F12, for some reason). Spacebar occupies 2.0 to 2.5 key widths only.A standard JIS keyboard with just the main section for alphanumerics, no function keys. Looks modern and mechanical, with a narrow white case. The spacebar also occupies 2.0 or 2.5 key widths, yet there is also a narrow gap to the right of the Fn key and to the left of the left arrow key.A standard JIS keyboard including numpad, function keys, lights and a volume slider. Also some unusual circular spherical buttons above the Escape and Num Lock keys that appear to be activation lights for sleep and a Japanese function. The keyboard case is black and every key is black.A JIS keyboard including numpad and function row, but two large gaps (nearly a standard key width) next to the first and last buttons on the bottom row. The style of the keyboard is 1990s with beige case and alphanumeric keys, and light grey colours for all other keys including every function key.

1986 A computer with a keyboard and a screen

This image captures a quintessential piece of office equipment: a computer complete with a keyboard and a screen.
The computer is a crucial electronic device used in virtually every professional setting.
The keyboard, a classic input device, features a space bar and other keys, reminiscent of a traditional typewriter.
The computer screen presents text, possibly related to work or personal tasks.
There is also a subtle hint of sky, perhaps suggesting a window or a desktop background, adding a serene note to the otherwise technological scene.
The presence of this computer and its components exemplify typical office supplies found in a workspace.

1985 A computer with a keyboard and a monitor

This image features an indoor setting, presumably an office space, given the presence of office equipment.
Dominating the frame is a personal computer setup, including a computer keyboard and a monitor.
The keyboard boasts a clearly visible space bar, indicating it as an input device, while the monitor serves as an output device.
The computer system appears to be a key piece of office supplies, suggesting that this workspace may be used for tasks that involve typing and viewing digital content.
Aside from the computer setup, the room also features a wall in the backdrop, providing a neutral background for the scene.

Spacebar chat with its mastodon / matrix like approach seems like another future strong alternative to Discord. However right now it’s main available app is very incomplete. And there appears to be few instances. I’m also unclear how instances can interact. For now I’m sticking with Revolt chat no matter how unstable it can be.

1991 A computer with a keyboard and a screen

This image showcases a modern personal computer setup in an indoor setting, potentially an office environment due to the presence of office equipment.
The computer is a prominent piece of electronics, equipped with both an input and output device - a computer keyboard and a screen, respectively.
The keyboard complete with a space bar is an essential piece of computer hardware used for text input.
Similarly, the screen or display device is a crucial component that outputs multimedia content.
These components are connected to the computer terminal, making them key peripherals in the personal computer hardware setup.
This gadget is a testament to the advancement of electronic devices.

if you hung out on #cyborganic's #Spacebar in the 90s and early aughts, i'd love it if you waved me down. most of us hellyeah! networks people moved to our old moo (it's actually still up last time i checked but i haven't logged in for years) but i saw an open source implementation of Discord APIs called spacebar and it made me wonder where some of those fellow pioneers were at these days. other than @jjb of course ;) <4

I mistakenly thought that a friend was DJing at #SpaceBar, but that's next Saturday so I made a "night" of it elsewhere. Had not sussed that it was a #CFB game night but neatly avoided the crowds by inadvertently heading home at halftime. Lärabar, edamame, blue corn chips & tri-colored popcorn were my #comfortfood haul Oh my God I'm supporting the maize-industrial complex

@yelly I hear a lot of people use #Matrix. There's also #Revolt, #Guilded, #Element, and probably more.

I found something called #Spacebar a while ago which is apparently compatible with Discord, so you can still talk to people who haven't switched to something else. But I haven't looked at it too much yet.

2023-06-13

Fedi folks: what's the deal with the #Discord -like #Revolt ?

It seems to allow you to run your own locally-hosted servers so all of your data isn't being piped stright to the usual overlords. Is it all it's cracked up to be?

Our own hosted Mumble and Jitsi servers are pretty creaky these days and we'd be looking for something secure, locally-hosted, private and with native Linux as well as Windows client and server software. A Discord-lite without total violation of privacy.

What about #Spacebar ? I know nothing about that one other than having seen it mentioned in the Discord-replacement category.

2023-06-12

@lori i guess there's #slack but thats more business oriented. you could go back to / try #TeamSpeak or #Mumble.

my problem is everyone else is on #discord so its just too convenient to move from. however i did just find something called #spacebar which is apparently compatible with discord. sounds interesting, ill have to do more research on it

@SWAT @Amandine @carlschwan @matrix

#Revolt @revoltchat
or
#Spacebar formerly #fosscord

But both of them under heavy development and #Revolt wont support any kind of federation

#Spacebar would implement federation, have no voice support at the Moment, because no webrtc implementation yet.

I'm still kind of sad that all the alternatives to services like #Discord (FOR COMMUNITIES, NOT HOSTING SOFTWARE BINARIES) are lacking in one way or another

#Matrix is either slow, messy, or both
#Revolt is far from finished
#Spacebar is unfinished...

2023-04-11

@glassbottommeg I noticed that too. And it's convienient that alternatives like #Revolt or #Spacebar (previously #Fosscord) start popping up. Good old #TeamSpeak @teamspeak is also working on a new client. And then there is #Matrix @matrix.

None of these are a replacement (yet) but they all have potential.

So I found out that foss[REDACTED] got renamed to Spacebar because of [REDACTED] apparently thinking that they own the words [REDACTED], [REDACTED], and [REDACTED].
I guess that also means that I can't call my power [REDACTED]s "power [REDACTED]s" anymore, which is fine, since I can also call them cables.
That also means that we can't say "[REDACTED]s" anymore, because it sounds too much like [REDACTED], and Big Daddy [REDACTED]'s feelings will get hurt if we use [REDACTED], so have to stick to "roast" and whatnot.
