Another motor vehicle ran into fence of Monterey’s North Fremont St center-of-street bike lanes. This design was 1st such design in California. (BTW #CalBike referred to the project as "Worst award-winning bikeway” of 2020 calbike.org/calbikes-best-and-.)

San Francisco followed Monterey's lead, putting center lanes on Valencia St, then realized that (for most locales) center bikeways aren’t the smartest design. Thanks to persistence of advocate & organizer @LukeBornheimer & other supporters of protected curbside bike lanes—not center lanes—things are looking up for Valencia. Intersection of North Fremont Street and Casanova Avenue in Monterey. In this photo, shot 8 Sept 2024, a piece of fence that normally surrounds the bike lanes that were built in the center of the street is missing—apparently yet another motor vehicle has run into this unusual infrastructure. Arrow is pointing to some of the many pieces of sharp debris, apparently from the collision; the debris in the bike lane stretched nearly to the Ramona intersection.
