Today came some goodies from Japan. A book about eki stamps, I adore them and want to collect them all (well, probably impossible to collect them all, but at least some). Then a mook about interesting sites on Hokkaido, I want to visit Hokkaido one day🤞 Then the book by a Japanese travel journal writer mini_minor, it looks so interesting😍! And finally the April issue of Esse magazine.

For centuries, Knossos was regarded merely as a city of myth and legend until it was unearthed in 1900 CE by English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans.

The excavated site, adorned with frescoes, shed light on the Minoan sport of bull jumping and made the ancient tale of Theseus and the Minotaur (a creature that was half-man and half-bull) seem less fantastical. During bull-jumping, male athletes engaged closely with the bull as they leaped over its horns. This practice likely inspired the ancient perception of the 'myth' of the Minotaur, as these athletes appeared to embody the traits of both men and bulls. And, the discovery of the palace's complex layout lent credibility to the legend of the labyrinth.

It was Evans who first referred to the ancient inhabitants of Crete as 'Minoan,' named after King Minos of Knossos. His excavation and reconstruction efforts, though controversial, laid the groundwork for all subsequent research of Minoan civilization.
