Bird lifen järjestämä koulujen ja varhaiskasvatuksen pihabongausviikko alkaa tänään.
Omien lasten koulussa ja päiväkodissa tämä huomioidaan hyvin.

Minä järjestän töissä koko päiväkodin pihabongauksen, jossa varmasti näkee lintuja, koska voi bongailla myös laminoituja lintuja päiväkodin pihalla. Jokaisen linnun takana on sen nimi. Jos aika ja taidot olisivat riittäneet, olisi voitu liittää vielä qr-koodilla linnun ääni.
Lisäksi vien osan omaa ryhmää bongausretkelle metsään (arvioisin bongausajan näillä pienillä olevan n. 15min) ja ohjeistan muut ryhmän aikuiset, jotta he voivat bongata muiden lasten kanssa pihassa tai lähiympäristössä.
Kaikille osallistujille on tulostettu Bird lifen sivuilta diplomit.

Lisäksi osallistetaan vanhempia laittamalla eteiseen lintubingo, johon saa pienellä tähtitarralla merkata bongaamansa linnut.
Lapset myös värittävät omat lintubingot, joita voi hyödyntää kotona, jos tahtoo.

I just spent three nights camping at #BirdLife Australia's #Gluepot Reserve in the #mallee of #SouthAustralia.

Tenperatures were reaching 37/38 C, and it's very dry there. The reserve has a small dam, but no other open water. The #MurrayRiver is about 40 km to the south.

But the #insects that appeared at night were primarily #freshwater species - lots of #CaddisFlies (#Trichoptera), #Chironomidae and #BackSwimmers (#Notonectidae).

This video shows the insects attracted to a #LepiLED UV light. If these mostly originated down at the river, the insect #biomass streaming up across this region (wind-blown?) is absolutely staggering.

There were also LOTS of #microbats everywhere, and the stars were incredible.

Silmät kuin kekäleet – Eyes like embers
Harakka piti isoa ääntä pusikoiden katveessa ja lähestyin uteliaana, mikä sai aikaan tuollaisen mekkalan. Harakka lähti pois, enkä nähnyt mitään erikoista, kunnes pusikon puusta loistivat nuo oranssit silmät. Silloin näin ensimmäisen kerran sarvipöllön, enkä sen jälkeen ole lajia nähnyt. Muisto lyhyestä kohtaamisesta ei ole unohtunut. Sarvipöllö on muuttolintu, osa talvehtii, jos ruokatilanne on hyvä. Lintulaji on aika harvinainen Suomessa.

Magpie was making a big noise in the bushes and I approached curiously, what was causing such a fuss. Magpie went away, and I didn't see anything special until those orange eyes shone from the tree in the bushes. That was the first time I saw a long-eared owl, and I haven't seen the species since. The memory of the brief encounter hasn't been forgotten. The long-eared owl is a migratory bird, some winters if the food situation is good. The bird species is quite rare in Finland.

There is this strange, repetitive, deep wooing going on outside the window, like a introverted foghorn going off. Never misses a beat. What a rhythm!

I believe it's actually a bird, a Common Bronzewing.

Oh! a brief pause, then he's joined by his missus. Deep whooing in tandem now.

Kun tuli mainittua isolepinkäinen hiirikuvan yhteydessä, niin tässä lintunen saaliinsa kanssa. Taitaa olla myyrä, kun on lyhyt häntä. Jos lintu on jo saanut syötyä kyllikseen, se varastoi loput sopivaan oksanhankaan seuraavaa ateriaa varten.

When I mentioned great gray shrike in connection with the mouse picture, here is the bird with its prey. It must be a mole, as it has short tail. If the bird has already eaten enough, it stores the rest in a suitable branch for the next meal.
