A critter that's entirely new to me: long-eared owls. We spent a long time not seeing them and then, once we saw them, a long time laughing at their fashion choices.

Silmät kuin kekäleet – Eyes like embers
Harakka piti isoa ääntä pusikoiden katveessa ja lähestyin uteliaana, mikä sai aikaan tuollaisen mekkalan. Harakka lähti pois, enkä nähnyt mitään erikoista, kunnes pusikon puusta loistivat nuo oranssit silmät. Silloin näin ensimmäisen kerran sarvipöllön, enkä sen jälkeen ole lajia nähnyt. Muisto lyhyestä kohtaamisesta ei ole unohtunut. Sarvipöllö on muuttolintu, osa talvehtii, jos ruokatilanne on hyvä. Lintulaji on aika harvinainen Suomessa.

Magpie was making a big noise in the bushes and I approached curiously, what was causing such a fuss. Magpie went away, and I didn't see anything special until those orange eyes shone from the tree in the bushes. That was the first time I saw a long-eared owl, and I haven't seen the species since. The memory of the brief encounter hasn't been forgotten. The long-eared owl is a migratory bird, some winters if the food situation is good. The bird species is quite rare in Finland.

Brr… it has been freezing. The snow has settled, hardened, and now crunches loudly under every step. Usually that sound sends birds and other wildlife scattering long before they come into range of my wondering lens. But not this one. No — this bird stayed.

Late in the afternoon, as the sun briefly pushed through heavy, snow-laden clouds in the Loonse en Drunense Duinen, I noticed a shape in the trees. Calm. Watching. Unimpressed. Almost as if it was thinking: “Hmm… a two-meter-tall human, 110 kilos, plus 15 kilos of camera gear. I’ve seen worse.”

There it was: the Long-eared Owl —

Latin: Asio otus

Despite its name, those “ears” aren’t ears at all, but feather tufts used for camouflage and communication. In winter, Long-eared Owls often roost quietly during the day, relying on stillness and pattern rather than flight. That stillness is what made this encounter possible, even with the snow betraying every step I took.

Photographing in these conditions is always a balance between physics and physiology. Cold air, fading light, and handheld shooting meant choices had to be made. I settled on f/16, 1/1000s, ISO 3200, using my Canon 5D Mark IV paired with the Sigma 100–400mm. A fast shutter to freeze even the slightest movement, high ISO to compensate, and a deep depth of field to keep that piercing gaze sharp.

For my linocut parliament of owls I made two columns of local owls - like government an which the loyal opposition in this parliament in a tree printed in black against a dark grey evening sky! It reads “A parliament of owls” in gothic lettering and the word Owl is made with an eye and feathers.

Right to left and top to bottom the owls are: Northern saw-whet, Eastern screech, Barred, long-eared, Barn and Great Horned owl. They are printed in shades of brown on white chine collé paper on the grey background.

Eulen, wie zum Beispiel die Waldohreulen, sind aufgrund ihrer kurzen Schnäbel und weil sie kurzgesichtig sind, nicht dazu in der Lage eigene Nester zu bauen. Deshalb nutzen sie gerne Höhlen und Nischen, wo sie ihre Eier einfach auf dem Boden ablegen können. Einige Eulen nutzen nach Möglichkeit aber auch verlassene Krähen- und Elsternester.

Die Waldohreule, hier ein Ästling, bewohnt gerne Wälder in der Nähe von offenen Flächen. Die inneren Waldbereiche meidet sie eher, da sie dort in Konkurrenz zum stärkeren Waldkauz steht. Die Eulen bauen ihre Nester selten selber, sondern brüten in alten Krähen- oder Greifvogelnestern. Ihre Hauptnahrungsquelle sind Wühlmäuse und Mäuse, die sie bevorzugt in offenen Flächen jagt. Herrscht ein Mangel an Kleinnagern, jagt die Waldohreule aber auch kleinere Vögel.
