bad photos are often still good enough to confirm #BirdIdentification

i don't want to frighten my hummingbird away from the feeders during these freeze days so this is shot through window glass while he dines at the far feeder > terrible picture but you can still confirm species - note the black "chin" and slight contrast with the purple at the bottom of the gorget

An amazingly noisy, fuzzy photo of a hovering hummingbird at a feeder but not yet feeding so you can see entire profile-- beak, hint of tongue, black "chin" and purple base of gorget. Black-chinned Hummingbird male, a winter visitor to the Gulf Coast. This one has been in my yard for months, i first confirmed his ID on Dec 9, 2025. Photo by Peachfront, Jan 26, 2026.

more from my flash photography day...

kind of a tough hummingbird to identify in my opinion, can you name this birb? (answer will be in the AltTxt)

A shiny but tiny green hummingbird with a straight bill is approaching an equally shiny red flower that is probably as long as the hovering birb. This is the Steely-vented Hummingbird. Aracauna Lodge, CO. Photo by Peachfront. This was taken by setting up the flash near the flowers or feeders and waiting for the hummingbirds to appear (it did not take long, this is a popular well-maintained feeder spot) and then hitting the trigger...

This evening I thought I would share a cool experience I just had 🤗. I was outside, playing with my dogs, and this itty-bitty owl flew across the yard and landed on a corner fence post! I slowly approached so I could take some photos and video, and the little guy actually let me get pretty close. I stopped at about 10-15ft away, took some pics, and just talked and trilled to them. (Yup, I'm that gal lol). They actually trilled back once (cutest noise ever 🥺🫶) and stayed for a few minutes before taking off into the night. Happy hunting, little buddy. Stay safe!

P.S. anybody know which species this is? I'm in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and I would guess this little one wasn't more than 8-10" tall 🤔.

There was a bit of action in the neighbour's oak tree at dusk yesterday, with a pair of raptors taking turns to come and perch for a while, then fly off, and return a few minutes later. This picture is the only one vaguely exploitable taken with my zoom lens in the low light. From the hunched shoulders and striped head/neck, It kind of looks like a sparrowhawk, but I'm not really sure. It wouldn't be the first time that sparrowhawks have come and perched here, as I have pictures from previous years in better daylight and better focus. Any other suggestions from the bird experts out there?

Blurred picture of a bird of prey perched in the tangled branches of an oak tree in fading light with the light against it. The bird has a speckled breast and what appears to be two whitish stripes either side of a dark central stripe on its head, extending from its beak. The area around the eyes is dark or black.

A photograph of a pink and chrome classic Catholic Cathedral in Buga, Colombia as seen on a gray day through the window glass of a vehicle-- you can see the frame in the upper right. Can you spot the bird and name the species? Or would you end up like me and not being able to do that until you got home and spotted a tiny but familiar silhouette in the photograph? Nov 2025. Hey #Colorado #birders
I saw a large bird in a tree that I'm struggling to identify. It was about as big as or slightly smaller than a magpie and solid grey all over, but had orange-ish under wings. I think it had a crest on its head. This was in #BroomfieldCO

I scored 8 out of 10 on the bird ID quiz.

Not bad, given I've never seen a Cassin's Finch before.

Seeking wisdom from anyone familiar with bird banding and experience with reporting a bird band number… more specifically, I would like to know if it’s possible to report a partial number?

The backstory: I've been observing a family of Swainson’s hawks in our neighbourhood for the last 9 years. A new male replaced the patriarch in 2023. He is banded.

Despite my best photographing efforts, I have only confirmed the last 5 digits of the number, plus one other digit for sure (but unsure of its position). He will surely be leaving soon on his epic migration to Argentina.

I would love to know his story. Am I out of luck?

Close encounter: during a walk in local park last week, this cutie flew down and sat for minutes on a branch right in front of me. My guess an Eastern Wood-Pewee from slightly paler lower beak, but I could be wrong. Expert opinion will be appreciated.

Calling all birders: is this a snipe? Just seen an hour ago in eastern Pennsylvania.

A narrow stream in winter, brown grass on either side. From the left bank of the stream the head and neck of a bird is leaning out. It is patterned brown and off-white with a strikingly long bill.

I saw a bird very similar to this is central Kentucky, in Cynthiana.

Can someone ID this?

It is listed as a Dunlin, but that is an aquatic bird.

@Krisss

I think the alt text is trying to say "flamingo". This is incorrect. It is an #Ibis based on the curved bill shape. There is such a thing as a Scarlet Ibis, so perhaps that is what it is?
