New hearing aid day.

Every time, it feels like one hand giveth, and the other hand taketh away.

So I'm playing around figuring where each improvement and each disprovement (?) occurs.

Already found that the speech-in-noise really sucks compared to my old ones. The overall sound is better, though. Also, it hates my cell phone. I'll see if my streamer works with it (which is how I fixed it with my previous pair). But my previous pair had some functionality with my phone. This pair has none.

This WAS a #PrincessCruises onboard tracking medallion. It's now recycled electronics. #BluetoothLE and #NFC, it was convenient as hell onboard, but I couldn't help but worry over the database it was connected to on the backend.

Very close to having solid #BluetoothLE support in @aprsdroid. SQ2CPA did the heavy lifting. I'm making a few changes to get it working reliably with TNC3/TNC4 and hopefully other dual-mode devices. #hamradio #aprs

Servus.

I'm looking for someone with Bluetooth LE experience. I can pay reasonably well, for a few hours of strategic guidance on an open source project.

DM me for more contact info.

Lilbits: Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4S now comes with up to 8GB RAM, modular laptop maker Framework to expand into new categories

The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4S is a SODIMM-style version of the Compute Module 4. It has the same processor as the standard model, but the form factor restricts the I/O capabilities, so it’s not quite as versatile. And when it first launched in 2022, the Raspberry PI CM4S was only available with 1GB of RAM.

Now Raspberry Pi has announced that the CM4S can now be purchased with 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB of LPDDR4-3200 memory onboard. But you’re probably not going to find them in stores anytime soon – they’re positioned as a commercial product and sold in boxes of 200 or more.

Here’s a roundup of recent tech news from around the web.

New memory variants for the Raspberry Pi Compute Module family [Raspberry Pi]

Raspberry Pi notes that the goal was to make things easy for “industrial customers who are migrating from Compute Module 3 or Compute Module 3+” solutions by offering a version of the CM4 in the same form factor. But even with the new memory options, there are some downsides to the form factor: it lacks a PCIe interface, Ethernet connections top out at 350Mbit/s, and USB capabilities top out at USB 2.0, among other things.

Framework won’t be just a laptop company anymore [The Verge]

Modular laptop maker Framework plans to expand into “additional product categories,” but isn’t ready to say what they are yet. Desktops? Smartphones? Tablets? Watches? Something else entirely? I guess we’ll find out… eventually.

Still no success - the #BLE sniffer shows me a CONNECT_IND packet and then nothing else. Encryption? If yes, it has to be a static key as there was never any key exchange between app and camera (the wifi key is "1234567890"). No idea on how to continue. #BluetoothLE

The #smartHome will have about a dozen of these #RaspberryPi units throughout:

• Raspberry Pi 3B(+) - runs #DietPi and #Chromium to #homeAutomation dashboard, and #Snapcast for audio.
• Touchscreen provides access to control lights & audio
• Room speakers are powered by connected iQAudio #DigiAmp+

Hope is that built-in WiFi & Bluetooth may also be used for internal positioning of phones, #BluetoothLE devices etc. in future.

Tracer, A Platform For All Things Movement Logging

[electroSwing] is building a lightweight, battery-powered board to track and measure movement of all kinds, called Tracer. Powered by an ESP32, it has a LSM6DSL 6DoF accelerometer & gyroscope sensor, and a VL53L0X Time-of-Flight sensor. A small Li-ion battery in a holder reportedly provides for 5 hours of streaming data over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) at 100 Hz. It's essentially a wireless movement sensor platform to be paired with a more powerful computer for data logging and analysis. What's such a platform good for?

They show it attached to a tennis racket, saying you could use the data to, for a start, count the strokes done in a given match. They've also strapped it to a bicycle's crankshaft and used it as a cadence sensor - good for gauging your cycling efficiency! But of course, this can be used in more applications than sport. A device like this could be used for logging movement of any relatively nearby objects, be it your cat, an office chair, or a door someone might slam a bit too hard at times. Say, you wanted to develop a sleep tracker and were to collect some data for defining your algorithms and planning your hardware requirements - this would work wonders.

There's already available example code for streaming data into the Phyphox data logging and graphing app, as well as schematics - hopefully, the full board files will be available soon. A worthy open-source opponent to commercial devices available for similar purposes, this platform is good news for any hacker that wants to do motion measurement projects without reinventing quite a few wheels at once. We are told this board might get to CrowdSupply soon, and we can't wait! Platforms like these, if done well, can grow an offspring of new projects for us to have fun with, and our paid projects get all that much easier to work on.

We've shown projects with such sensors before - here's one that helps your rifle aim by giving you data to debug your last-second rifle movements, and another that logs movement data from inside a football. There's a million endpoints you could stream your data into, and we are told you could even use Google Sheets. Just a year ago, we held our Data Logging contest and the entries we received will surely point out quite a few under-explored areas in your daily life!
