A sign of spring: Geranium maculatum (cranesbill) flowers have opened in a shady spot in the front garden.

Lavender-pink five-petalled flowers of Geranium maculatum, also known as cranesbill, stand out in dappled sun over the plant's five-lobed, spotted, light green palmate leaves. In front of the plant are leaves of wild violet (Viola sororia).

Meadow Crane's-bill at Brandon Marsh, Warwickshire, yesterday. The flowers of this wild Geranium always occur in pairs; when they have gone to seed they will extend the long 'beaks' from which the species gets its name.

Meadow Crane's-bill (or Cranesbill), Geranium pratense. In this image, one flower (in the top left quarter of the photo) is facing the camera, its 'twin' - lower down and to the right, is facing away from us, out of focus and partially obscured by other parts of the plant. Some of the plant's multi-lobed, toothed leaves can be seen, along with two pairs of buds from which more flowers will emerge, and another pair of former flowers turning to seed (which have not yet developed their long 'beaks'). The flowers each bear five pale violet-blue petals, with each petal bearing pale veins extending from the base.

Nominally #Geranium x pratense 'Johnson's Blue'. I say nominally because the genus hybridizes and self-seeds prolifically, and this cultivar is widely grown and has been for a long time - it's a very agreeable perennial; so it's highly likely that somewhere along the line the ancestors of this plant out-crossed. If you google the cultivar you'll see that every picture looks slightly different.

Flowers In The Rain.

Raindrops on a Purple Cranesbill (Geranium x magnificum) flower in my back garden, Brighton, Sussex UK.

I usually follow back, and really appreciate and often follow boosters & likers.

Cutleaf geranium. Geranium dissectum, or cutleaf cranesbill. Usually grows prone so it can reach a length of 2 feet. Native to Europe but is found in both the east and west coasts of the US and Canada. Considered invasive. The flowers are tiny at only 1/4 inch across.
