I'm excited to announce that I'll be starting a new role as Ecosystem Engineering and Operations Lead for @yoctoproject on Monday 8th December.
I started using and contributing to OpenEmbedded & Yocto Project back in 2013 and since then it's been a key part of my career. I've seen the project from many points of view over the last decade-and-a-bit: first as a hobbyist, then working with board vendors, silicon vendors, system integrators and end users. Now I'll be seeing it from inside the project leadership team and helping to shape its future.
Yocto Project has an excellent team and a strong base of members & contributors. This new role will help to coordinate our activities, take pressure off our Software Architect and scale up what we can deliver. I expect to be spending a lot of time thinking about the challenges and opportunities presented by the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). And I'll still be getting my hands dirty on some actual code as needed to help the project move forward!
Tired of my old dedicated i5 taking 2 hours for a single #Buildroot build, I moved the whole development environment to my powerful i7 machine (running Windows, but using #Bashlab OS Live on USB).
After installing the essential packages, the compilation time dropped to just 30 minutes! 🚀 That's a huge boost in efficiency!

It frustrates me that all the #EmbeddedLinux vendors are so Yocto centric. I had a bad experience with Yocto once years ago and I am reticent to give it another go. More importantly I don't want an appliance disk image, I just want Debian.
Unfortunately building a Debian image that boots on a non-UEFI embedded device is very non-obvious to me, and evidently to others as that's why armbian exists. But naturally I would need to add a custom board support and build my own armbian. 😐
Mouser is now stocking SMARC modules from Toradex. They have vastly more detailed datasheets publicly available than their competitors who either are unclear about what SMARC features are implemented, or require a professional e-mail address to get the real datasheet (or both).
