The Granaries on the Motława River, Gdansk, Poland

The island on the Motława River, where these buildings are located, has been an industrial district since the 13th century. In the 16th century, there were about 340 granaries here - large and spacious warehouses, with many floors, built of wood, brick, clay, and stone. The granaries located on the banks of the rivers had wooden platforms for loading or unloading goods. They did not have numbers, but names.

For several hundred years, Granary Island was spared war damage, the situation changed in 1813 - after Russian shelling from the slopes of Biskupia Górka, almost two hundred granaries with valuable supplies burned down completely.

After reconstruction, the area of the granary district became an unusual composition of warehouse buildings, the hallmark of which were the patterned walls of half-timbered structures. From the mid-19th century, the spacious buildings were gradually adapted to office and residential functions, but in 1914, there were still 121 warehouses operating on Granary Island.

In 1945, the island was almost completely destroyed during the fighting between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army. Only three granaries survived the war.

In the 1980s, after many years of work, buildings referring to the old granary architecture were built in the central part of the island area. In the late 1990s, a successful reconstruction of the southern frontage of Stągiewna Street was carried out.

The district is being rebuilt primarily with tourist traffic in mind, the lack of greenery and social infrastructure makes Granary Island an area rather unsuitable for permanent residence. On the other hand, and in a sense - there was a return to the original function of Granary Island, because the apartments can be treated as warehouses, and tourists as precious grain. ;)

Project update: Minor problems after a storm, and rye field approved by the rye master himself

The rye still grows like crazy and the field was now checked by the "rye master" of the region. He is happy with what he saw (uff, what a relief) and we are so looking forward to see the field ourselves in 4 weeks. Our hut in the middle of the field had to be stabilised after a storm, as soon as we are back it will be extended and fixed even better.

[Our project deals with the question of the identity-creating significance of rye for Finland - especially in the region of Vörå, resp. Ostrobothnia - and how this relationship can be reflected artistically ("Rågens rike" means "Kingdom of Rye" and describes this very region - Finlands granary) The project is hosted by Abramsgården in Vörå (Vöyri) in Finland-Sweden.]

Project update: the rye and the cats are growing!

The hosts of our project in Finland keep us updated when we are not there. Things are looking good, the rye is growing and the cats too. We all think that KAJ can be proud that they ended up in the forth place at ESC and we are looking forward to use the sauna that was send to Basel to support them. Because that particular mobile sauna will go back to Vörå and can be used there (we will update on that once we are back).

We will be back for Vörådagarna 2025 which will take place in the first week of July. More to come!

Art meets Finnish #grainfarming or It takes a village to plant a rye field
Part 4 / MÄMMI/MEMMA
A participartory #soundperformance

In the spring chapter of our project series #PRESERVED we designed a sound performance celebrating the traditional dessert "#mämmi" served at #Easter. For those who are not Finnish - mämmi is dark-brown pudding made of rye flour and rye malt, served with cream and sugar. The performance was planned as a participartory project where the people of #Andkil (#Vörå) were invited to join and contribute.

The central meeting point of the project - the Plaza del Råg, located in the middle of the #rye field which was planted in August 2024 served as a stage. An active/powered speaker system was used to present an experimental (sound) interpretation of the terms „mämmi“ (fin.) and "#memma" (swed.), inspired by #Dadaism or artists and writers like Ernst Jandl and Josef Beuys. The active speaker enabled us to put different layers of sound on top of each other and repeat them in loops to eventually creating a space of sound based on the constant repetition of the declination of the terms „mämmi“ and "memma". Philip (@(@arteluce23) started the performance by repeating the declinations and then we handed the microphone to the people from the village. We had a blast. After the performance mämmi was served in the newly restored barn of #Abramsgården.

Early C18 brick granary set on brick staddle stones and complete with postbox. First floor is a dovecote with numerous holes for nesting, each with projecting slate for landing. Roof in poor condition, as are the two dormer-type openings that give access for the birds.

Modlin Fortress, Granary, Poland

Built in 1844 at the mouth of the Narew to the Vistula. Designed by the Polish architect Jan Jakub Gay. In addition to storage tasks, it could have defensive functions, because on the first floor it was equipped with openings adapted to fire both artillery and firearms. It served as a grain warehouse until 1853, i.e. until it was purchased by the then military authorities from the Bank of Poland, intended for a warehouse of sapper equipment (it was used for this purpose until September 1939).

During the bombing of 1939, the granary was burned inside by incendiary bombs, but its thick walls survived and it remained in this condition until the end of the war. After the war, on the order of the communist authorities, the building was demolished, which was stopped by prof. Jan Zachwatowicz, chief architect rebuilding Warsaw. The west wing has already been demolished.

In 1999, the building played the role of the Horeszko Castle in the adaptation of Adam Mickiewicz’s poem Pan Tadeusz, directed by Andrzej Wajda.

Circa 2022. A #traditional granary in the remote village of Khuzama, #Nagaland that’s now used more as a store room. Dzüko Valley is just behind those hills. #Elephant tracks and bones are seen once in a while in the valley so it’s a guess that they still roam those areas.

Inset is the #tribal symbolism above the entrance of the granary - two crows and a star.

For #RomanSiteSaturday this is #Housesteads, the more modern name for #Vercovicium, a #Roman #Fort along #HadriansWall in the north of #England. At Housesteads there is a section of the wall you're actually allowed to walk along (not that this stops people from walking along the bits you're not supposed to). This picture is of the #granary building. The pillars were to raise the floor and keep grain stored there dry.

#History #Archaeology

A bright day with plenty of white and grey clouds but large patches of clear blue sky too, over a typically English countryside view of rolling, grassy hills and groupings of trees. In the foreground are the ruins of a Roman building forming the outline of a long barn-like building with stone walls, complete and less than ten bricks high on three sides, but with an opening in front of our view. Dropping down from this entrance the ground space is filled with stone blocks arranged equidistant in a grid six wide by at least fifteen long.
