Au centre de cette photo, le mont Cook (Aoraki). Le plus haut sommet de Nouvelle-Zélande, s’élève sous un ciel bleu clair partiellement voilé de nuages. Sa cime enneigée perce les nuages, dominant une chaîne de montagnes aux pentes escarpées, parfois sombres, parfois illuminés par les rayons du soleil.

Au premier plan, des plantes alpines et des touffes d’herbe dorée recouvrent une pente douce. En contrebas, un vaste lac glaciaire – aux eaux couleur turquoise pâle et laiteuses – s’étend paisiblement. Ce lac est bordé par un impressionnant rempart rocheux, formé par une moraine glaciaire, comme une falaise grise qui barre l’accès direct au massif.

En arrière-plan, une vallée glaciaire sinueuse remonte entre les montagnes, où serpente une rivière alimentée par la fonte des glaciers. L’ensemble compose un paysage spectaculaire, sauvage et intact, typique des Alpes du Sud néo-zélandaises.

SEA TRIP BY RAILWAY
The #Hutt Valley residents who spend their working hours in the city had a lively experience this morning, for the #railway trip had about it some of the thrills and discomforts of a sea voyage in heavy #weather. The tide being high, water lay deep on some portions of the track, and the enginedrivers were cautious in traversing these sections for fear of the ballasting having been disturbed. But the passengers were less disturbed on this account than by the way the train was splashed. Every now and then a carriage “shipped a sea,” and the crash on the windows and the squirting of the water through the interstices above the frames, effectively interrupted the usual suburban small talk or digestion of the sporting news. Railway passengers have often wondered, no doubt, why there is a small swinging window at the top of the main “sash” in the railway cars, and especially why that little window will not close properly. Hutt passengers can enlighten them. It is a device to break the force of the dashing waves by permitting the water to enter the cars and dowse the passengers.
