Turns out that IBM Model M is a Silver Label and is quite in demand... who knew (lots of people except me!).

I stripped it and cleaned it. Thinking about getting a Model M to USB conversion board for it.

His/Hers desk setup in 2017. My laptop was a ThinkPad X250 running OpenBSD, attached to a 2560x1440 Dell monitor. Hers was a 2016 Rose Gold MacBook Retina running whatever macOS, and a Mac mini 2012 attached to the same model monitor. This was our townhouse in Ecuador. The keyboard is a Model M SSK from 1997. Two desks, side by side, located in a window on the ground floor. Outside the window is bright daylight, with two well-manicured Latin American townhomes visible across the way. The desks each have a laptop on a stand; a keyboard; a mouse/trackpad; and a monitor connected to them. The desk on the left: a pink Macbook Retina, connected to a 24" monitor. It has a white wireless Mac keyboard, and matching trackpad. The monitor has local news broadcast on it. The right desk: a ThinkPad running OpenBSD, connected to its own monitor. The monitor displays the cwm window manager, and xclock. The wallpaper is visible, showing a space shuttle about to launch. The keyboard is a white/beige Model M SSK, white. There is a trackball on this desk. The desks are adjacent to one another, each with matching chairs. There is a fur rug underneath both desks where one's feet would be.

I'm slowly inching closer to my poor man's imitation of an IBM Industrial SSK since the real thing is too rare and expensive. Maybe one day I will finish it off with the industrial dark gray chassis, but I'm already pretty happy with this.

Finally managed to convert my IBM Model M to USB using the nuess0r ctrl-M!
I am satisfied with the result, it works like a charm :)

The connectors for the Model M matrix have been soldered on accordingly, as well as a wire for ground.

The back of the case shows the USB Type B connector and a lever type button next to it.

The Model M keyboard reassembled. Num Lock lit, a black cable with ferrite core sticking from the back implying the original controller with SDL connector is not used. The Num Lock LED is lit.

Ohhhhh. Shiny. 😍

Just got my IBM Model M from www.clickykeyboards.com - it looks fantastic.

I’ll be running it through a KVM into my 486 and Pentium 3 machines.. once I get the desk space to do so.

@pgcd @WillA763 Obviously the #VIC20 did predate modern keyboard layout conventions that the #ModelM (Actually #ModelF, but noone but the followers of #chyrosran22 will know!) implemented and that got copied since then...

#Commodore did OFC design the entire #Ecosystem and aside from #Software didn rule over it with iron fist, so at that time noone "knew" better...

@WillA763 lets just say the layout worked for the limited systems' capabilities and lack of standardization in the pre-#ModelM era...
