I’ve been reading a popular science monthly magazine DELTA. It has been run since 1974 by University of Warsaw. Delta traditionally covers maths, physics and astronomy. Bits of biology and chemistry also sneak in. It is in Polish (although guest writers from universities abroad also publish there), but also open access (nice pdfs) & getting a properly written strict science text translated into English shouldn’t be a problem these days ;-)

Amusing Experiments (after Martin Gardner) by Martin Gardner; M. Stoliar ; L. Fomin

SCIENCE READER FOR THE EIGHTH FORM OF SECONDARY SCHOOL

In this book you will find descriptions of amusing experiments which are based upon well-known scientific facts. You can easily carry out these experiments yourselves, and you will not need any special equipment. But if you wish to show the experiments to your friends, we advise you to practise them a few times before you demonstrate.
The experiments are not only amusing: after you have carried out each experiment and read the explanation, you will learn something interesting and important in such fields of science as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy and psychology.

The book will help you to learn a number of new English words which are connected with science. When you have learned them, it will be much easier for you to read scientific literature in English in the senior forms. At the end of the book you will find the vocabulary of the words which you may not know. Some of the terms are given in the footnotes. We hope that you will find the book interesting and easy to read, and that it will help you to become science-minded people.

You can get the book here and here.

अनूठे जहाज़ – ख्यातोस्लाव साखर्नीव ( Wondorous Ships In Hindi by Svyatoslav Sakharnov)

– द. अ. (Virus – Friend Or Foe in Hindi by D. G. Zatula, S.A. Mamedova)

Recent reading:

In VAGINA OBSCURA: AN ANATOMICAL VOYAGE, Rachel E. Gross set out to write a book about the vagina, & expanded her scope to include the rest of the female reproductive system.

The book covers both historical stories and research frontiers. The two chapters about the clitoris are good examples of this range; the first chapter discusses Marie Bonaparte (1882-1962), her interest in sexual psychology that led her to Freud's psychoanalysis, and the disappointing results as she tried to fix her inability to achieve a vaginal-only orgasm. The next chapter covers the newly discovered anatomy of the clitoris & she interviews staff at a French clinic that repairs the damage from genital cutting. It also ends up tying into to the final chapter about vaginoplasty, the construction of a vagina for MtF trans people.

Other chapters discuss Miriam Menkin's 1940s work on human embryonic development that led to IVF, the complexities of endometriosis, the regenerative power of the uterus, and the invention of hormone therapy. The book is excellent popular-science writing, reminded me of Mary Roach's BONK but is less jokey (though Gross does include a few jokes).

Geologic Calendar (Geology ⛰️)

The Geologic Calendar is a scale in which the geological timespan of the Earth is mapped onto a calendrical year; that is to say, the day one of the Earth took place on a geologic January 1 at precisely midnight, and today's date and time is December 31 at midnight. On this calendar, the inferred appearance of the first living sing...

just sent a book manuscript off into the ether (random literary agents) - a popular science book on the #Oceans (surprise surprise). It was a decade or more in the making (so far). One way of taking advantage of all the sitting around that happens during expeditions. Now await the harsh reality 🤓 #popularscience #nonfiction - I took the liberty of sticking in a bunch of contextual doodles - lets see how that goes 🤓 - wish me luck 🍀

sketch of an internal wave in the ocean - there's a boat and people swimming on the surface and beneath there is the outline of an internal wave - there are some dimensions added in.
