🔒 Oh, the irony! A for in public admin that's as accessible as a hipster's Wi-Fi password 🙄. Apparently, here means "by invite only," but hey, at least the error message doesn't discriminate 🤷‍♂️.

GOVERNANCE. Mariana Mazzucato's forthcoming book is about how big consultancies that governments rely on do not have the expertise they claim. I'm surprised that this is news to anyone. But contract states are also not good at procurement and often ask for mega-projects with unrealistic, conflicting, and vague specifications. Early indications suggest Mazzucato & Collington think those two problems are related; hard to buy something you hardly understand.

However, some of the coastal counties in Maine as well as some counties around Columbus seem to have fairly high levels of agriculture.

The rural counties in Ohio closer to West Virginia also appear to be less agrarian than those counties that are closer to Indiana.

On the whole, there does not appear to be a clear pattern that indicates that most rural areas are those most heavily engaged in agriculture. /2

GOVERNANCE. New book about how government experts self-sabotage in Australia. Doesn’t seem to delve too deeply into the systemic pathologies undermining advice-giving. But nice to see Giandomenico Majone‘s classic Evidence, Argument, and Persuasion (1989) getting a re-airing. Also free.

I printed out this snippet of Ariel Aberg-Riger's budget explainer when I started as an analyst [bloomberg.com/news/articles/20].

Today it's got me thinking about creative ways to grow the accessibility & engagement of our budget story.

I’m inspired by Kenneth Mejia's LA campaign graphics, the #SolidarityBudget in Seattle, and Mural Arts Philadelphia's “A People’s Budget” project.

What #ParticipatoryBudgeting examples should I read up on? Particularly interested in #PublicAdmin implementations.

Photo of a hand holding a piece of paper. The page has part of an Ariel Aberg-Riger comic, that says:

“If our budgets were truly made for us—clear, engaging stories about how a city plans to spend our money—what would they look like?

A truly accessible budget:

1. Tells you what the budget process is, who’s in charge, and when and how you can participate.

2. Explains how it works (the different funds, the revenue sources for each fund).

3. Decodes jargon (or ditches it completely).

4. Lays out a summary vision that communicates goals, vision, and rationale.

5. Visualizes spending by departments and services proportional to the overall budget.

6. Lets you see how spending has changed over time."

#introductions post time! I'm Spencer, an Ontarian stuck in Toronto. I'm a #localgovernment nerd involved in #publicadmin and hope to see more government policy wonk types make their way over to Mastodon.

I'm a fan of #SciFi, #gardening, #cooking, and #lego.

One of the most interesting projects I''m working on right now is #PinQuest2022 where I'm working to get a lapel pin from every municipality in Ontario. I'm around 265 right now and working to upload them all to PinQuest.ca

A bulletin board with approximately 265 lapel pins from Ontario municipalities.

Hi Mastodon!

I am a PhD student at the University of Georgia studying state and local governance. I am beginning my dissertation which will explore how varying degrees of rurality influence local government decision-making.

I also have working papers on PSM (and its association with trust in government & service delivery preferences), the impact of threats on public administrators, and intergovernmental networking among Michigan townships.
