So if you want to self-host Standard Notes (which is open source) you have to pay $39/year for a "self-hosting license" to get a few additional themes? 🤨 Who came up with this business model?

With a heavy heart I'm cancelling one of my last US-based services @standardnotes and replace it with @monocles #nextcloud solution (crypto via gocryptfs).
I'm not willing to let any Dollar from my spendings go as tax money to a regime that disrespects basic human rights like the one in the USA.
Dear #standardnotes team, I hope you make it through this regime and then we will find together again. Your service and support was always flawless! 🫶

The 5 #Linux #AppImages I depend on daily - and how to add them to your desktop menu
AppImages have come a long way in recent years. Here's why you should check them out if you haven't already, and a few of my favorites to start with.

I downloaded the Standard Notes AppImage and created an App Drawer menu item, I used the Occultist from Darkest Dungeon as the icon image.
It runs quite nicely, notes can be saved locally with the free version (I opted to go without an account). Premium features are locked to the paid tiers, which are yearly and a bit too pricey for my needs.
I'm happy Standard Notes makes an effort to support Linux, using an AppImage which is truly portable and runs on just about any distro.
I think I have found my ultimate note-taking system.
1. Simplenote: for non-sensitive, quick, and dirty notes. These notes are not for long-term retention or to follow any specific format.
2. Standard Notes: for sensitive information. These notes are for long-term retention, and I switch off editing mode to avoid accidental changes.
3. Obsidian: for polished long-form notes for long-term retention. These notes are more like my knowledge base.

Finally getting back to this and have made a decision. I've setup a private #git repo on #Codeberg and am moving my #notes there.
This has many benefits:
- I already have an account (no need for additional registrations)
- Notes can be viewed and edited online, from any browser (desktop and phone)
- Notes can also be downloaded, synced and used offline (via git)
- Codeberg / #Forgejo is #FOSS and I don't have to self-host it
- Notes can be in Markdown (a premium feature on #StandardNotes)
I currently use the free version of #StandardNotes but am getting more and more annoyed by it's "premium features" (clicking on an option only to be told you need to pay for it). If an option's not available on the free plan, stop shoving it in my face.
Looking for a free #FOSS alternative that doesn't require self-hosting and that has minimal paid features. Suggestions?

Finally I consolidated my notes taking system in two different private apps:
#Logseq for professional and project management, the journal makes easy to take notes during meetings and link to projects and people. The queries are so powerful and helps with status report and followup with the stakeholders.
The second is #StandardNotes mostly for personal use and topics that I have time to think about how to organise into categories or tags. It's a great app!
@tripplehelix Out of curiosity from #standardnotes user to a former user: why? ;-)
Going through the #Anytype to #Capacities PKM data migration has been incredibly painful (as in one by one import copy-paste). I am thinking about dropping the idea of migrating and instead start from scratch, or only the minimum data set…. That’s what I had to do when I migrated off #StandardNotes @capacities
Question: What are your thoughts about Standard Notes?
Been thinking of giving it a try because I'm looking for something simple and with good cross platform support. I've been using OneNote but find it to be overkill. Obsidian is also fussy, and Joplin doesn't like iOS.
What is giving me pause is primarily subscription fatigue. Is it really worth the cost? Is it any better than using Simple Note (beyond privacy concerns).
So...who uses what for the notes storage? I've used #SimpleNotes for a very long time, but few years ago I've switched to #Joplin, while it has all the features I need, its performance, look and flow is not what I expect. I'd like to use #Obsidian, but the licensing is a complete mess. Since the acquisition, #StandardNotes still not available for Proton users, so no go for now (or ever?)
Just checked and yep, it's the same. #StandardNotes, which has recently been acquired by #Proton, doesn't even give you rich text in the notes without paying at least $90/year. Even #Simplenote allows markup, as does #Obsidian. Nothing to see here, move along. https://standardnotes.com/plans
