Yesterday was the "Digital Independence Day", which I only learned of, today. Coincidentally yesterday I wrote my first blog post in years! I used to be on wordpress.com for nearly a decade, then moved my blogging to #g+ #facebook, #linkedin and co.

With the process of shutting down all my #ustech and #bigtech accounts, I felt the need of having a place to myself again, where I could share my thoughts. For now, I've decided to use #zola as a static site generator, which gets hosted to @Codeberg

Here's my successful "Hello, world!" that'll allow me to further my journey towards #digitalindependence as this static site will not only replace my old blogging software, but I plan to replace with it so much more! What a fitting coincidence, to have that post see the light of day on the Digital Independence Day :)

You don't need to roll your own web app or anything, but if you are just serving information, use a static site generator. There are many great options that are very accessible.

I'm testing the new BSSG test build. I've been working on it for a while to refactor the build process and move it entirely to RAM (optionally, for now).
On my OpenBSD Amsterdam VPS (single core, spinning drives), build times are cut down to less than a third of the last release, and on other devices it takes about half the time, with zero I/O.

The current caching system isn't exactly rock-solid, and personally, I prefer a faster full build over maintaining all that complexity.

I'll probably upload everything as soon as I've ironed out a couple of bugs, in the coming days.

Would you recommend Eleventy or Hugo for my use case?

My local non-profit has a Wix site. It's costing us more than we'd like to pay, considering we're just using it for a static site.

I'm planning to set up a CMS for content contributors to use. No need for them to code.

Three personas I'm planning for:

1) Content contributors

2) Designers - Must know how to write HTML and CSS, and how to use Git to merge in changes to the site's design.

3) Admin (me) - Must know how to keep all of this running.

For content contributors and the admin, I don't think Eleventy vs. Hugo matters. But, maybe for designers. Maybe one makes it easier than the other to form a directory structure for the content and make templates that render it nicely.

I plan to have 2+ content types right from the beginning. I'm thinking of blog posts and a gallery of photo albums right now.

My coworkers hooked our #StaticSiteGenerator up to an #LLM, so we could turn the most efficient way to host content into the absolute least efficient way to do anything.

I like a lot about are.na and I hate a lot about are.na. So I did what I always do in such cases, and wrote a mediocre bash script that lets me publish my exported are.na collections as webpages.

Meet crumble.sh [1] which is a sister script of pancake.sh [2], where I do the same, but with markdown files. Pretty happy how everything turned out so far and I guess I will return to it with some styling and fixes after a while.

My band has a website. I made it using 1990s technology. And 2K20s technology. And I think it’s pretty nice.

I've added a #PlainText exporter to my bespoke #StaticSiteGenerator.

Most pages on my site now have .txt counterparts, which for now you can access by appending the extension to the URL directly, e.g. https://balintmagyar.com/colophon.txt

I'd like to look into hosting #GeminiProtocol and/or #Gopher mirrors of my site at some point, and this felt like a logical step towards that. Shout out to @fab for the inspiration!

I've forked JBake, ported to Kotlin, upgraded all deps, added support for Texy!, replaced the backend database, and about to release it to Maven Central within days. Also it's now buildable with Maven, and has E2E tests.

Sculpin 4.x will include an experimental "live editor mode", so you can edit your content inside your web browser when running "generate --watch --server --editor".

But that command line invocation is getting extremely silly. It should be condensed into a single command.

How do folks feel about a "run" command? Or what about making it the default behaviour, so running "vendor/bin/sculpin" is enough to go into generate+watch+serve+edit mode?
