Native species are important to the local ecology, but most people today have no idea what species are native to the area they live in - and probably they'll move soon anyway.

We also had a nest of bees in our yard a couple of years ago. We put up a small wood partition and let them be. How many people are willing to just let nature be?

And would the HOA even let them?

The Cherry Tree Dilemma: Mindfulness, Complexity and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)
Adrian Ayres Fisher, originally published by Ecological Gardening
April 28, 2025

Everywhere, it’s necessary to pay attention, to get to know the neighborhood and its denizens, the non-human citizens whose families probably have been living there longer than you maybe have been alive. To learn the lay of the land—literally.

In attachment blossoms fall, in aversion weeds spread. Dogen, Genjo Koan (1233 CE) Teaser photo credit: Author supplied.

"I did recognize it: a weeping cherry—not a naturally grown specimen of one of the beautiful Japanese varieties, but a ā€œfrankentree,ā€ which, as Brian Funk of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has written, ā€œare the flowering cherries on sale at home improvement storesā€ that ā€œlook like mops, or umbrellas, or octopus trees.ā€ ...Not only was it ungainly, but: what was the point of its existence, and what good would it do?

The cherry tree in my back yard makes no fruit that I’ve seen.

...Focusing on the pale pink cloud almost induced a haiku state of mind. And then, the very next day, a crew of solitary miner bees emerged from the ground right next to the tree and converged on the blossoms. Perfect timing! That surprising event changed the reality of the situation. Did the bees live there before the tree was installed? Did a few enterprising individuals travel over from a neighboring yard one spring and decide to establish a colony?"

A new color of Cana Lilly has bloomed! Cana Lillie’s always make me think of animal crossing. One minute you have a yellow plant and a red plant and then suddenly a flame color appears in the middle. #bloomscrolling #flowers #garden #gardening #yard

Large bloom with yellow outside, then orange and then a red center section.

What’s blooming today is the first flower of the year for my plumbago! It’s extremely easy to care for, attracts insects and blooms until the frost. What’s not to love? It also helped teach both my kids to swim. The petals fall into the pool and my kids wanted to learn to swim so they could catch them in the deeper water. #bloomscrolling #bloom #flower #yard #gardening

Fucsia are such cheerful plants. When I was growing up my Mom had a huge one that was covered in what looked like little ballerinas. I don’t find they do overly well in my yard. I have this one in a pot so I can move it as the weather gets hotter. Anyway, that’s what’s blooming today in my yard. #bloomscrolling #bloom #flowers #garden #yard

Flower with outer petals of pale pink, then the central petals are bright purple.

My mini roses have got rather sad in my window box. What do we think gardeners, is it worth trying them somewhere else or be happy with the blooms I got from them in the past? I am definately going to put something else here. So do I keep or do I trash? In previous attempts to perk them up I have changed their soil, fed them rose food and even tried coffee grounds. #gardening #yard #roses

Mini rose bush. Green leaves but a lot of black stems that look rather sad. The whole plant looks rather sad with a few green leaves.

What’s blooming today is this yellow snapdragon. I don’t remember planting it among my grasses, so either he’s appeared from years past, or he’s migrated. I loved snap dragons when I was a kid. They are just such a fun flower to snap snap. #bloomscrolling #bloom #garden #yard

This image shows two dogs in a grassy and dirt-covered backyard, enclosed by a wooden fence.

In the foreground, a medium-sized dog with long, wavy, golden-red fur is sitting upright, facing towards the left side of the frame. It has a dark collar with orange accents. Parents were a golden and a poodle.

Further back and to the left, a much smaller dog, Yorkie mix, with long, dark, and somewhat shaggy fur is also sitting. It's wearing a dark harness. This smaller dog is looking in the general direction of the larger dog.

The ground beneath the dogs is a mix of patchy green grass and areas of bare brown dirt. Behind the dogs, the wooden fence runs horizontally across the frame. Beyond the fence, there are trees with green leaves and glimpses of a few outbuildings. The lighting suggests it's daytime, with shadows cast on the ground.

Sadly one of my plumeria got stem rot while it was wintering inside. I cut off the affected branch and managed to save a small top piece. After a couple of weeks in a recovery pot it has sprouted little baby leaves! #gardening #yard #plumeria

People who use outdoor furniture... when do you have the time or energy to enjoy it?

I have furniture in the backyard all wrapped and covered in a tarp for winter. The last couple of summers, we were so busy and the weather was so uncooperative that we never ended up using any of it (despite spending hours cleaning it all up at the start of summer)

I might get an hour to indulge in a cigar here and there but entertaining guests or just lounging on a summer day seems so far out of reach.
