Looking at ways to replace my elderly & noisy #diskstation with a silent #SSD #NAS...
Hardware: #raspberrypi 5 with a #geekworm X1004 SSD hat in a Geekworm P579 case, with a 480Gb NVMe stick from a defunct laptop, running Pi OS lite.
Software: tried #OpenMediaVault 7, too many crashes & hangs, total dog's breakfast. Looked at #CasaOS but don't trust the privacy policy.
Think I'll just set up #Samba via #SSH and forget fancy web GUIs. I seem to be more confident with the shell these days.

I finally have Ubuntu 25 running on my Intel NUC and have the GPU working!
But the entire reason was to install CasaOS so I could "run local network stuff" so I have a cool new local file server, which is very nice.
But I've also learned the trials and tribulations of running things in #docker. I wanted to run #Ollama in #CasaOS but it just couldn't see the GPU.
So... I'm just running ollama from the terminal as a system service, with GPU

My goal is to have CasaOS running in my home
I was told Ubuntu was the 'best' distro for this (??)
I'm loading it on my old SkullCanyon NUC
Apparently 24.04 LTS seems to have an incompatibility with video drivers
I can't get the GPU to work (at all)
What other distro should I try? #Debian? #Fedora? #Mint (Debian Edition?)
Keep in mind I don't really care which distro I use. #CasaOS is my only goal so I'm looking for the one that is most compatible with my 7. year old Intel NUC.
Will CasaOS auf ein frisches RaspberryPI OS 64bit Lite installieren (Raspi 4 8GB). Apps / Appstore wird nicht geladen und Fehlermeldung kommt. Guithub weiß dass ein Downgrade auf v0.4.7 hilft. Habe ich gemacht. Gleicher Fehler.

1. Und womit verbringt ihr so eure Sonntage?

Aujourd'hui la ressourcerie fêtait sa seconde année d'existence. J'y ai présenté le réemploi de PC avec #LinuxMint, #casaos et #Yunohost 😎
having tried #Truenas and found it a little over the top for a home user have installed #ZimaOS which is based on #CasaOS.
Like night and day, so much more user friendly, doesn't assume you want to automatically do have a RAID (not really useful as all data is also held on my mac mini external drives (and RAID is not a backup) - for added protection media is also on a mini pc server in my front room (3 copies but none in separate location as yet)

#CasaOS is elegant, and reasonably easy to use. A lite NAS/server toolkit like OpenMediaVault or Synology. There doesn't seem to be a way to bulk-install plugins (which may just be docker containers anyway). Here's the OOBE

These little ThinkCentre #m710q units make smashing #homelab hardware. I've got them running Ubuntu Server with #CasaOS. One primarily deals with household backups (hence the external drive) Using #Nextcloud. The other serves up a variety of apps and services. #Tailscale gives me access anywhere.
Borked my #CasaOS install over the weekend playing with #OMV. OMV is just a wrecking ball.
Docker makes it easy to just keep going, but I am ditching CasaOS and just working directly with Debian.

TL DR: j'envisage d'investir dans un homeserver, avez-vous des conseils?
J'ai actuellement un VPS avec yunohost pour les outils que j'utilise (cette instance Gotosocial, mon site web...). Je souhaite installer une application qui n'est pas disponible sur Yunohost, et je commence à voir les limites des capacités de mon VPS (surtout la RAM). Financièrement, je n'ai pas envie de payer davantage mon abonnement pour le VPS. Du coup, je me demande si ça ne vaudrait pas le coup (et le coût) d'acheter et de mettre en place un serveur perso, un truc physique sur lequel j'installerais un OS comme Casa OS (cet OS permet d'installer des appli basées sur Docker, ce qui a l'air intéressant en terme d'applications disponibles, je n'aurais plus à dépendre de ce qui est paramétré par yunohost).
Est-ce que mon raisonnement est solide? Est-ce qu'un homeserver est difficile à gérer? Je sais utiliser la ligne de commande (faire des copier coller dans un terminal ne me dérange pas trop). Mais je préfère grandement une interface graphique. Casa OS a l'air assez ergonomique à utiliser.
Avez-vous des conseils pour choisir un bon serveur? quelle fourchette de prix je dois envisager?
Questions subsidiaires: Est-ce que la migration de mon VPS vers un homeserver est possible à partir des trucs installés via yunohost ou il faut repartir de zéro? (pour le site web, je pense qu'il suffit de changer les paramètres DNS du nom de domaine pour pointer vers le serveur physique donc pas compliqué, mais pour l'instance GotoSocial, je pense que c'est une autre paire de manches)
