> Aron Christensen was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest while #hiking the Walupt Lake Trail in the #CascadeRange, but his family says #LewisCounty authorities spent months suggesting the 49-year-old had died from a โwidowmakerโ heart attack or from tainted #marijuana.

Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Hood are more than just beautiful peaksโthey're potential hazards. Learn why these Cascade volcanoes are closely monitored and what risks they pose. ๐ #Volcanoes #CascadeRange #NaturalHazards https://www.ryanjhite.com/2024/07/09/the-looming-threat-understanding-volcanic-hazards-in-the-united-states/
I wish I were a geologist just so I could do all the long-overdue research on Washingtonโs own Glacier Peak volcano (and become a mountaineer in the process, I guess). Itโs amazing how little is known about it. But kind of understandable, too, since itโs embedded in the remote Cascades.

Iโve finally officially laid eyes on #GlacierPeak/#Dakobed, the 5th of Washington Stateโs 5 stratovolcanoes. Itโs just hiding in plain sight, among the #CascadeRange peaks NE of #Seattle and actually visible from the city on good days. A magnificent, slumbering monster, capable of the same sort of violence as #MountStHelens/#WyEast, but so remote that itโs only been possible to install one monitoring station so far.
Every #volcano deserves our respect, awe, and reverence.

Pregaming for this PNW move by watching a Nick Zentner lecture about the Pacific Northwest's ghost volcanoes. He is so good.
EDIT: delightfully nerdy, fairly accessible, and funny. He's a great teacher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6H18xVnb14I&pp=ygUcbmljayB6ZW50bmVyIGdob3N0IHZvbGNhbm9lcw%3D%3D

The Hinman Glacier, in the Cascades east of Seattle, is now no more. It's the "biggest North Cascade glacier to completely disappear."

This #whale-sized #marine #reptile in the #RoyalTyrrellMuseum is the #ichthyosaur Shastasaurus sikkaniensis. Unusually, it was not only one of the earliest members of its group, but one of the very largest. Its #species name comes from where it was found, along the Sikanni Chief River which flows out of the #RockyMountains of #BritishColumbia ๐จ๐ฆ. Its #genus name comes from Mt. #Shasta in the #CascadeRange, where other species of this Triassic titan have been found.
