De Korè van Lyon

De korè van Lyon (MusÊe des Beaux-Arts, Lyon)

Kijk, dit is nou leuk. Tweemaal.

At first I thought this was some sort of fossil - it felt like part of the rock. Turns out it's a chiton, a marine mollusc. This one is a giant chiton, Plaxiphora albida.

Chitons use biomineralisation to coat their teeth in iron (technically magnetite) so they can chew away on coral and algae growing on rocks.

Another 2024 print for #insertAnInvert: made for the #InsertAnInvert2024 prompt is crawler, about shellfish who can drag themselves over surface like the spectacularly coloured lined chitons (Tonicella lineata), beautiful, tiny marine mollusc of the North Pacific. I don’t usually make reduction prints but I think I might otherwise loose my mind trying to capture the complex patterns.

Final stage of my chiton print shows the ovoid animal from above with a series of plates surrounded by a girdle. The plates have pale pink and orangey brown downward pointing triangles down the middle with slanted thin stripes of burgundy, blue and black on either side. The girdle around the circumference has a reddish rim with yellow and blue dashes and a burgundy ring around the plates.

@alcootatooter also and just for good measure :awesome: #wildoz
"There are about 1000 species of #Chiton worldwide, Australia has about 150 species and 90% of these are native to #Australia. Most species are quite small (between 2 and 5 cm long). The largest rarely exceed 30 cm. All chitons are marine living, in cold water and in the tropics, mostly in #intertidal or #subtidal zones." mesa.edu.au/molluscs/molluscs_

@alcootatooter oh wow I had no idea about #chiton #chitons 😯 thanks for showing me!!

Chitons are an unusual type of marine mollusc belonging to the class Polyplacophora. They differ from other molluscs by having an 8-plated shell, which is held together by a tough, skirt- like band of tissues known as the 'girdle’ (this may obscure the plates in some species). m https://www.museum.qld.gov.au > ... : Chitons - Animals of Queensland

I saw a living #chiton down at Rodeo beach this morning, usually just see the remains wash up. The tide was far enough out to see some rock pools and a few of these wonderful creatures.

I don’t usually do reduction prints, but it seems the only sane way to get the registration right and reproduce the pattern. This print is going to need a lot of layers!

A grid of drying linocut prints on a tabletop with cutting mats. There are at least 11 prints in the photo and they are on white printmaking paper 4” x 6”. They each have one registration tab attached and show the prints in the second and third stage of my chiton print with the cool pale pink ovoid shape with some white triangles and fine striped lines on the plates, overlaid with pale orangey yellow with carved areas showing pink triangles on the plates. Some of the prints also have a burgundy-brown layer with carved areas revealing orangey-yellow squarish spots on the girdle (the soft circumference area of the animal beyond the plates).

The next shelled creature prompt for #InsertAnInvert2024 is a crawler - an invertebrate which can drag itself across surfaces. I cannot resist the spectacular lined chiton (Tonicella lineata) which have amazing, varied, complex multicoloured patterned shells. 🧵1/2

"You’d probably walk past a chiton without seeing it. These creatures often look like nothing more than another speck of seaweed. But it sees you. At least, if it’s one of the species with eyes dotting its platemail shell... some of these tough #mollusks sport the most recently evolved eyes with a lens"

Ive been doing a lot of social critique posts, so here is a picture of a chiton I found the other day.

Based on my tentative amateur identification, this is a Mossy Chiton, (Mopalia muscosa). This little mollusk was soaking in the sun in the intertidal zone, likely eager for the water to return.

Chitons, or Polyplacophorans, are severely underrated. As a group they date back fo the late Cambrian/early Ordovician, and share many similarities with the famous Halwaxiids.

Next up in my 2022 favourite photos round-up we have a common chiton (Lepidochitona cinerea). This mollusc come in a variety of patterns and colours and I thought this one was particularly special because of its pink girdle that matches the pink encrusting algae it’s sitting on. You can see the polymorphism (the physical variety) of these guys on my website. I made a database of them!

A close up of a chiton - it is oval shaped and covered in overlapping plates (a bit like a woodlouse). Around the edge is a ‘skirt’ that is bumpy and coloured pink. The chiton sits on a rock covered in pink encrusting algae.
