Medium shot of Indigenous weaving piece hanging taking up the center of the frame. The top of the hanging is suspended by twine from a gray metal pole, likely part of a tent frame or awning structure. The hanging comprises a thick, woven band, from which hang alternating strands of thick, white rope with fluffy tassels and narrower strips of tanned leather and knotted brown cord. The visual texture is varied due to the different materials. The backdrop is a cluttered outdoor scene, including a partial view of a large RV to the right, and a workbench with various camping supplies, tools beneath and to the left. The lighting is natural daylight, with some areas in shadow.

Around it are scattered tools & materials, including scissors, a file, sandpaper, a wooden bowl & some colorful papers.Low-angle close-up shot of a Coast Salish Indigenous cedar wood carving against a deep blue night skies background. The subject is a detailed raven's head & face. The raven is tan with a visible wood grain texture. It is attached to a cedar woven hat with some woven fiber fringe that drapes around the raven's head. The blue background includes a faint layer of white clouds right above the horizon. Sprinkled throughout the blue is an effect of twinkling stars in different sizes.

A Vancouver Island First Nation whose people were the first to greet European explorers in the region almost 250 years ago is taking British Columbia to court, seeking title to their traditional territories and financial compensation.

Chief Mike Maquinna, a descendent of #ChiefMaquinna who met British explorer Capt. James Cook in 1776, says the claim in #BCSupremeCourt seeks to return decision-making, resource and ecological stewardship to the #Mowachaht / #Muchalalaht First Nation.

He says the province has been acting as the sole decision-making authority in the #GoldRiver / #Tahsis areas of northern #VancouverIsland especially with regards to the forest resource, without the consent of his nation.

Hereditary Chief Jerry Jack says the claim filed today seeks title to about 66,000 hectares of land from #FriendlyCove to Tahsis in the north and #ButtleLake in the east, and an undisclosed amount of financial compensation.

*White men speak with forked tongues*

The federal government is blocking First Nations leaders in British Columbia from participating in consultations to address the badly backlogged Jordan's Principle children's program, CBC Indigenous has learned.

The move came shortly before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared at the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) chiefs' meeting in Ottawa last week, where he touted his past pledge to find "a new way of working together" that includes "welcoming you to be part of the conversations."

However, federal lawyers had just withheld consent for the B.C.-based First Nations Leadership Council to take part in the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal-ordered talks, citing what the government called "practical reasons" — prompting some leaders to condemn the disconnect.

Tsahaukuse, George Quocksister Jr. is a #HereditaryChief of the #Laichkwiltach Nation and the son of Elizabeth and George Quocksister. He is a passionate advocate for the protection of #WildSalmon as a crucial part of his culture and the food security of his people, and is working to ban the practice of #SalmonFarming on the west coast. He lives in Campbell River, BC.

This is from our 2020 #DiscoveryIslands flotilla protest & restocking patrol with George & 2 other BC Indigenous Chiefs(Darren Blaney & Bill Wilson) from North Island regions.

The fight to get fish farms out of BC waters started in the late 80s & continues.

When the salmon return to rivers to spawn the bears, eagles, lots of critters bring the carcass into forests to feed on. This creates a nitrogen cycle which makes the forest grow. Which creates the air we breathe. Without the salmon Earth will die. There is a lot of science proof out there that says just that.Homalco Chief Darren Blaney & George Quocksister Jr, on fishing boat, facing the ocean & islands, wearing their Wild Salmon forever long-sleeved shirts. One of the new Indigenous friends that I made at the ribbon skirt workshop this weekend, Kecia, is a fellow weirdo Aquarian & from Namgis First Nation in Alert Bay. Although we just met, I've met some of her family from her birthplace prior - it was really cool to chat about those unexpected connections.

Kecia brought this bag that her niece, Brianna Dick, made. It's a gorgeous #PurpleCamas #CoastSalish design.
Brianna has an #OnlineStore where you can see/buy some of her #handmade #Indigenous #ArtsAndCrafts

#BriannaBearArt is an Indigenous - owned and founded, #Canadian #artist store established in 2020 by Brianna Bear. Based in the traditional territory of the #Lekwungen, place to smoke herring lands of the #Songhees and #Esquimalt nations in #VictoriaBC.

Brianna started first as an artist with more than fifteen plus years of experience. She began learning under her grandfather Skip Dicks younger brother, Butch Dick. Afterwards she branched out into discovering her roots and design through her #cultural connections to Songhees & #Namgis formline design.

Today, working as one of a few Indigenous female artist within her traditional territory of the Songhees people, she has worked on murals, logos, small business designs, small event designs and more!

Brianna believes in telling stories through her design as you will see through this site."

indiginews.com/news/parents-wi My partner and I had the honour of attending the naming ceremony and feast for this little one and others, including an adult friend receiving her traditional name. Her comment “You witnessed something that changed history for all indigenous people” still brings me to tears. Canada MUST do better. #indigenousbc
