"Building a Home in Between"
Here are tests of firing magazine pages in a ceramic electric kiln at around 1000C. The paper doesn't fully burn to ashes like we could think it would at those temperatures.
Over time this changes, the paper sucks in the humidity and it grows and becomes like a white powder.

A pile of falling apart stack of old magazines pages after they went into a ceramic kiln at a thousand degrees celsius. It looks very light, we can still see all the individual pages, the ink has burnt out so the pages are all off white beige.A pile of falling apart stack of old magazines pages after they went into a ceramic kiln at a thousand degrees celsius. For #MinimalismMonday, the #cowl of an #oastHouse

I love these oasts because they are so unique. #Oast houses or hop kilns were (or are) used to dry hops for brewing, and many have been converted into charming houses. The cowl keeps the weather out and allows a flow of air through the #kiln. You see them a lot in #Kent and other regions of #England. This one here can be found in #Pluckley. The #weatherVane is a nice touch I think!

A low-angle, silhouetted view of a traditional oast house against a bright, cloudy sky. The conical roof of the oast house dominates the left side of the frame, leading up to a cowl. A weather vane, featuring a small horse figure, extends horizontally from the side of the cowl towards the right. The sun is positioned behind the oast house and clouds, creating a bright halo effect and silhouetting the structure and the weather vane. The sky transitions from a bright, almost white area behind the oast house to a darker, more textured blue in the upper and right portions of the image.

Yay! I successfully replaced my control panel. It finally crapped out after a decade of exposure to constant humidity in Louisiana & Florida.

Wish I could say the same for my a/c unit. It was filled with clay dust & mold. I tried to clean it w/out getting the electrical components wet, but now it won’t turn on. Unlike a Kiln, a GE a/c isn’t designed to be maintained. I hate the idea of buying and discarding one every few years but don’t know what else to do.

A Skutt electric kiln is visible, alongside two control panels placed on a wooden table. A screwdriver is nearby, and there are wires connecting to the kiln. A concrete floor and wooden cabinets can be seen in the background Post-replacement photo: An electric kiln is shown in a workshop setting. The kiln features a digital control panel with an "Idle" status display. Several small clay pieces are positioned on the kiln's exterior. The background includes various craft supplies and a window.

Spent my Easter eating a delicious Danish Kringle with Ali and then made this doodle.

I am excited, its forbidden in a few ways. One of which is the tube sizes, which are fine tuned for brightness. That big bright white 25mm tube is thin lead glass- and it would take awhile to get it as hot as the 10 mm #blacklight tube, which will be made brighter by being the narrowest, most focused part of the arc.

On a bombarder, that would suck the narrow blacklight in. It is possibly the best combination to be bombarded in terms of glass heat sensitivity- buut I have an oven, so its baking out over night so I can make this the first try guaranteed :).

Hooray for Easter! After Minneapolis, I needed a day to sleep, and I still should send some emails, but I wanted to relax, and I feel recharged, -but there is about to be so much commercial bending.

Yaaay work!

The forbidden doodle with side mismatches, a cut, a weld, and two bends away from completion. Big white loops, smaller green tube glass loops, smaller red tube loops, and even thinner black tube loop with another long straight black tube coming off. On a piece of charred paper, on drywallWhite, Green, Red and black doodle with colors descending in size. Tools an brick wall background. The doodle from before, now in the kiln, with a tube running up the side from its electrode. An emerald loop, with a big white loop, with a straight emerald tube and a straight ruby tube. Straight tubes in those colors (and others) scatter the table, along with a larger straight, 25mm diameter tube. On drywall.
Excited about some new projects I've got in the works! Fingers crossed the bisque firing goes well and then they will be ready for glazing #pottery #stoneware #handmade #ceramics #vases #wallart #clay #studio #kiln #art #potterywheel

I wanted to make a business card holder but I didn't like any of the available molds, so I rigged this one up out of kiln posts. I was worried that they'd get stuck inside the glass, but it worked like a charm!

A sort piece of glass shaped sort of like a cross with a very wide middle section and teeny tiny arms sits on top of kiln paper, on top of a stack of small kiln posts. This sets in an open kiln, waiting to be fused. In the background sits the kiln post apparatus, paper knocked askew. The glass has slumped down into a neat little box with three sides the same length, and the back taller. The back is an irregular webbing made of opaline glass (what I've been calling glass amoebas), and the front is a black iridized herringbone.

"By the 17th century, many Japanese people kept cats as pets, and felines frequently appeared on decorated ceramics. Traditional ceramic manufacturing towns in Japan include Kutani, located in Ishikawa Prefecture. The Kutani kilns were established in the late 1600s, and then closed for more than a century before production was revived in the 1820s. Kutani ware remained obscure in the West until pieces were shown at the Paris Exhibition of 1867, where the porcelain was admired for its beauty and durability. In addition to dinnerware, Kutani artisans crafted sculpture for the export market, where the cat was a favorite subject. A very special thank you to Sandy Lerner for making this exhibition possible. See "Caticons: The Cat in Art" is on display, pre-security, in the International Terminal. http://bit.ly/Caticons" This was posted to our Instagram account on October 20, 2018 – https://millsfield.sfomuseum.org/instagram/1729357507/
