@gischpelino My understanding is that the boot flag is for BIOS-based systems, and I think this hardware uses EFI. The original Mac hdd has a 200M EFI partition. If that's required, I'd like to set it up on the new ssd, but that will require some creative repartitioning. 💀

My Saturday project was installing #linuxmint on an old Intel MacBook Air from 2017.
Installed without any problems. All devices are recognized.
The best part after installing linux is always that it feels like a new machine.

I have it running on an intel Ubuntu install.
I have an old MacBook (2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM). I’ve been experimenting creating a bootable Linux USB for this MacBook. I get the USB’s to boot but so far no joy with the Linux distros I’ve tried. Any recommendations are welcome.

A brief hiccup, first Linux journey, a few days ago.
It looks (and looked) bad, but staring at it now, I see the problem is simple: the installer was writing to the wrong USB. Instead of the target 1TB SSD, it went to the 16MB USB key 'sdb' from which 'Try' Ununtu (a full-blast version of Linux) and the installer had launched and were being hosted—back to its own temporary install, in other words.

Regular reminder for anyone who might have an Apple Silicon based Mac that Asahi Linux is a thing and a good thing. It's not just Intel Macs that can play nice with Linux.
I love my little M1 Macbook Air. It's great hardware and never gets overheated. But sometimes I need to play with Linux instead of MacOS.
Asahi installation was able to hive off a small partition during setup to dual-boot. It's very smooth and makes for a great desktop. I've got Firefox and LibreOffice and even Proton VPN running nice. It's ready for prime time.

Bisher läuft das alles sauber und macht eine ziemlich guten Eindruck. Also wenn man nicht auf eine spezielle Software angewiesen ist, die unter Linux nicht läuft, gibt es kaum einen Grund den Schritt zu Linux nicht zu wagen.
Asahi Linux uses DNF. It's essentially Fedora with the extra trimmings to make it Apple Silicon friendly.
Managed to install ProtonVPN after translating their cryptic instructions. Their CLI example didn't work for Asahi but pretending you have Fedora gets it over the hurdle.
Now just need to convince UpNote that Linux also runs on non-Intel hardware.
Asahi Linux is working very nicely on my little M1 MacBook Air. I wanted a clean environment that I could trust as secure.
Maybe I'll be inspired to spend a little more time writing code, updating the website, and tinkering with some FOSS.
It's very fast. Very clean. Mastodon looks peachy in my Firefox browser too :)
So, a few weeks into using my newly #Ubuntu powered mid-2011 #Mac and I'm still very much enjoying it. Knew that the RAM on the machine was a bit wanting (even still, the OS runs fast). So I opened up another same model Mac I have to repurpose some RAM. Discovered that I've been running the Ubuntu machine on only 4gb and the other Mac on 16. So now the Ubuntu machine has 12gb and continues to feel like I've purchased a brand new computer.

(Unfortunately this toxicity is pretty common nowadays in the Linux and FOSS community. All this political nonsense (making projects overly political, and on the on the other hand, abusing devs because of their political opinion), users taking things for granted, don't appreciating devs' hard work (don't forget that the vast majority of them do it in their spare time!), saying that this and that software sucks and nobody should use them (like many (or a few loud?) KDE users do with GNOME, or Arch fanboys with other distros) just because they personally don't like those software (if you're not one of them, cheers to you, otherwise please try to think with the head of the GNOME, Debian etc. devs, how do they feel when they see such toxicity). And no, I don't say that criticism shouldn't be expressed, but it should be constructive, and not like "this software sucks arse because only that other software satisfies my needs" or "these woke/Nazi devs should frick off")
(The Linux kernel project is a dumpsterfire these days, with C vs Rust wars and other nonsense, that doesn't help either)

Después de estar unos días probando la versión KDE de Fedora Asahi remix, he de decir que funciona bastante bien.
Lo único reseñable sería la compatibilidad con software ya que hay mucho software que todavía su versión para Linux no está disponible para la arquitectura aarch64.
