If all attempts to teach #luakit to other search engines fail, it will be removed from the system. I would have liked to have had a #webkit browser as an alternative, but that's not the case.

Yeah, it's a pity that there's no way to get to #WebKit through #Qt anymore. Somewhat ironic, since Webkit was forked from from #Konqueror, which was a #KDE project built on Qt.

There's also #Suckless Surf as an über-minimalistic browser (not too bad as an #SSB, honestly), but it's not a serious contender for daily driving. I don't even daily drive #LuaKit, and I love vim-style programs.

What are the other ones? The only other desktop #WebKit browser (that's #FOSS) I know of is #LuaKit.

@MisterMultiverse There is #Luakit for example, which is a quite old project actually and it is licensed under #GPLv3.

It uses #WebKitGTK and is configurable in #Lua. But the configuration complexity becomes absurdly high very quickly!

There are also some other projects, most of them also invoking the WebKitGTK engine. It’s not that there are no other browsers, but those are by far not in feature parity and pretty much none of them has a mobile version or synchronization – or are just not maintained anymore.

Actually I just tried #Luakit for the first time and it might be the best #browser I have ever used

My issue with the majority of other browsers I've tried are client-side window decorations which are distracting and stop the browser from having a native look and feel

I tried looking at minimal options like qute and Nyxt but I found their navigation methods to be abbrasive

Luakit feels like a sweet spot between intuitive and minimal

Will try daily driving it for a while to see how it goes

I would love to make #qutebrowser or #luakit my main browser, but I can't configure either of them to my needs the way I can with #librewolf using plugins.

After a search in the NetBSD packages for lightweight web browsers, the winners are: vimb, dillo, luakit and netsurf.

Dillo's new release 3.1.0 still hasn't landed, so no HTTPS there. Luakit is very neat, extremely lightweight, minimal, has vim-like bindings and would be perfect if it weren't for the constant white flashing between each pageload when using a custom, darker CSS. NetSurf is also quite neat, with tab support for heavier sessions.

The winner for me is vimb, which although leaving tabs to the window manager, has vim-like bindings, is pretty minimal and does not cause flashing when switching between pages on a custom darker CSS setting.

Honor mention to Arctic Fox, a Pale Moon clone that hits peak nostalgia with the pre-omnibar Firefox look. No theming, not as lightweight, but going strong at 29.5k commits since 2018.

Ich versuche ernsthaft hauptsächlich #qutebrowser oder #luakit zu nutzen. Doch immer wieder muss ich auf #Librewolf zurückgreifen, weil Webseiten nicht funktionieren. Beim Drogeriemarkt #dm z.B. zeigt qutebrowser das Suchfeld nicht an. Profan, aber für die Nutzung natürlich elementar. In Luakit blitzt die Seite kurz auf, um dann nur eine komplett weiße Fläche anzuzeigen, obwohl im Tab der Name richtig angezeigt wird.

Solche Widrigkeiten verleiden einem die Motivation, sich abseits des Mainstreams zu bewegen.

Basically, I like the #luakit browser better than #qutebrowser. But in today's contaminated Internet, staying there with both is a challenge.

#Firefox, #w3m, #xlinks, #NetSurf, and #Dillo, pretty much in order of decreasing frequency.

Occasionally also #falkon, #luakit, and #vimb, but quite seldom.

I'm fond of #Gecko, #WebKit, and #Web1point0 browsers, and avoid #Blink and #Electron like the plague.

Unfortunately, I have to switch from #luakit back to #qutebrowser. Mostly because some websites don’t work at all but also because it doesn’t support #webauthn.
