The entrance stairs to one of the most sacred places on Cambodia’s sacred mountain is often filled with people entering and leaving.

In ancient Khmer, the mountains were named after Indra, the king of gods in the Hinduist realm of Kambuja, or Khmer Angkor Empire as we call it today.

The Kulen Mountains is the mythic origin of the Khmer and Angkor Imperial culture and visiting and view all the sights take several days, or several visits.

But the visits are worth it.

Mein Weg zu Linux! TEIL2

Ich möchte euch erzählen, wie es weiter ging. Eines Tages hörte ich von einem Raspberry Pi, damals war es das Modell 2. Die Idee, einen so kleinen und kostengünstigen Computer zu nutzen, faszinierte mich. Um diesen kleinen Computer optimal nutzen zu können, musste ich mich intensiv mit Linux auseinandersetzen, da der Raspberry Pi ausschließlich darauf lief. Zu Beginn war ich etwas überfordert, da ich zuvor nur mit Windows gearbeitet hatte. Doch ich war entschlossen, es zu lernen.

Nach Monaten des Ausprobierens, mehrmaligem Löschen und Neuinstallieren sowie dem Durchforsten von Foren und Tutorials gelang es mir schließlich, das System zum Laufen zu bringen. Ich experimentierte mit verschiedenen Distributionen und lernte, wie ich Software installieren und konfigurieren konnte. Diese ersten Schritte waren herausfordernd, aber auch unglaublich befriedigend.

Mit dem neu gewonnenen Wissen über Linux wagte ich mich an ein weiteres Projekt: einen VServer im Internet, den ich einrichten wollte. Ich hatte viel über die Vorteile von Servern und Cloud-Diensten gelesen und wollte meine eigenen Erfahrungen sammeln. Nach zahlreichen Versuchen, Rückschlägen und dem ständigen Anpassen der Konfigurationen hatte ich schließlich Erfolg – der Server lief stabil und ich konnte ihn für verschiedene Anwendungen nutzen. Diese Erfahrung war ein echter Wendepunkt für mich, da ich nun die Kontrolle über meine eigene Serverumgebung hatte. Der Server läuft heute noch :-)

In der Folge entschied ich mich, einen Nextcloud-Server einzurichten, um meine Daten sicher zu speichern und zu synchronisieren. Ich integrierte verschiedene Funktionen wie Kalender, Foto-Uploads und weitere Anwendungen, die mir halfen, meine digitale Organisation zu verbessern. Es war spannend zu sehen, wie ich mit Linux nicht nur meine technischen Fähigkeiten erweitern, sondern auch meine Produktivität steigern konnte.

Als Nächstes war mein Arbeitscomputer an der Reihe, den ich auf Linux umstellte. Nach etwa einem halben Jahr des Distro-Hoppings, in dem ich verschiedene Distributionen ausprobierte, entschied ich mich schließlich für Debian. Diese Distribution bot mir die Stabilität und Flexibilität, die ich suchte, und ich fühlte mich damit sehr wohl.

Der Laptop, auf dem immer noch Windows installiert war, sollte ebenfalls umgestellt werden. Ich wollte die gesamte Hardware in meinem Haushalt auf Linux bringen, um ein einheitliches System zu haben. Es war eine spannende Herausforderung, und ich genoss es, die verschiedenen Distributionen zu vergleichen und herauszufinden, welche am besten zu meinen Bedürfnissen passte.

Zu guter Letzt, in diesem Jahr, erhielt mein Gaming-PC die letzte Linux-Installation, und zwar Garuda. Diese Distribution war besonders ansprechend für mich, da sie auf Leistung und Benutzerfreundlichkeit ausgelegt ist. Ich war begeistert von der Möglichkeit, meine Spiele unter Linux zu spielen und gleichzeitig die Vorteile eines offenen Betriebssystems zu genießen.

Ich fühle mich glücklich, dass ich die Möglichkeit hatte, all meine Geräte auf Linux umzustellen. Diese Reise hat mir nicht nur viel über Betriebssysteme beigebracht, sondern auch meine Fähigkeiten im Umgang mit Technologie erheblich erweitert. Ich habe gelernt, Probleme selbst zu lösen, und ich schätze die Community, die mir bei meinen Herausforderungen stets zur Seite stand. Der Wechsel zu Linux war nicht nur ein technischer Schritt, sondern auch eine persönliche Entwicklung, die mir neue Perspektiven eröffnet hat.

So if you "jump in to rabbit holes a lot" Use Doomemacs instead of emacs.. why? because doomemacs is already riced for you but emacs you can rice until it doesn't work anymore and waste 10's , hundreds of hours doing it. Another example #Archlinux vanilla, way too many ways you can customize Arch and never get anything done. Instead of Arch use a variant of Arch like #garuda-linux or manjaro etc.

It's been a Linux week. 😊

🐧 It started when I noticed Garuda Linux had updated to a new version, Broadwing, but had also released a new overall theme for the distro, called Mokka based on a theme called Catppuccin. Here on Sharkey I use a theme called Rosé Pine which is very similar, the same pastel lilac highlights, so it was a no-brainer to add the theme over my very pedestrian set-up!

🐧 I've done some defence of Linux Gaming this week, too, after a semi-interesting video led to some interesting conversation. The outdated myths and negativity around Linux are seemingly etched in stone at this point, I'm not sure what if anything will ever break through. I've been called a Liar simply for telling people I've been Gaming happily on the platform for two years, one guy even telling me he "still had to enter commands into Mint" to do so, whatever that meant. I installed two games yesterday through Steam. One 15 years old, the other from just 2023. Both were two clicks, one to install, another to play. Some people just can't accept it's that simple for any game on Linux. Wild.

🐧 Talking of Gaming, I've had an interesting catch-up with a piece of tech landing soon on Linux that might even improve the situation for many games still toiling with sub-par performance: NTSYNC, something thatwill help Linux more closely emulate some of the Windows APIs that games rely on. I came across this yesterday and it sounds amazing. It's not going to help every game but there are some extremely impressive numbers for a dozen of them doing the rounds. Everyone got excited about this back in January. Apparently it's being baked into Kernal 6.14 which is due in...oh, it released YESTERDAY. 😁 So now I'm waiting for that to percolate through my distro's repositories which should be in the next 24 hours or so. Once Proton updates I should, theoretically, start seeing some improvement in frame-rates. I'm excited to see this, much like I was waiting for Explicit Sync last year for Wayland.

Help! Im replacing my 13y/o tower /w a #miniPC (#AMD #Ryzen based) as my my main & want Linux powering it. Have exp /w #Unbuntu, #Mint, #Manjaro, #Q4 and Pi-OS, so I've got some knowledge. But, I'm not sure what distro may best meet my needs (smth /w gaming in mind?). #KDE is my pref DE, mostly daily browsing, but also gaming. Steam/GOG & #Emulation - prob not bleeding edge. Eyeing base #Debian & #Arch; are gaming focused distos useful? #Garuda decent? Thanks in advance for any comments!
