#Markup languages, from IBM's GML on down the line, including \(\TeX\), TeXinfo, Scribe, SGML, HTML, XML (thank you Jon @bosak🙏), XHTML, Markdown, and their many descendants, have influenced modern #computing in innumerable ways. And their impact will continue far into the future, long after I am gone.
But, from my admittedly-limited perspective, too few #software implementers have exploited the simplicity and the homoiconicity of the #LISP syntax—that much derided and reviled "lost-in-stupid-parentheses" abstract syntax representation that kickstarted it all.
Back in the 1980s, we used to incorporate into enterprise systems the DSLs implemented using baked-in Scheme interpreters. Indeed, GIMP did just that, until they caved in and replaced their Scheme scripting engine with a Python one.
Outdated as I may appear, I remain staunchly in favour of LISP/Scheme scripting DSL in large #software systems.
