Pine 3/3

Roof shingles are often made from pine, especially up north. These trusty old workers cover the roof of the bone mill outside of Sorsele, Sweden. --- No, I never knew what a bone mill was, either, until just last year. Before chemical fertilizers were invented, you'd use crushed animal bones, so there used to be thousands of bone mills way back when. I mean, everyone was farming, so everyone needed a bone mill. Today, there is a total of five (5) left in the whole of Sweden. Of course, we had to see them all. The northernmost one, in Sorsele, is by far the best kept one.

I find a great way of traveling is setting some rather quaint goals, because you never know what you'll get to see on your way there. You'll meet people, you'll learn things and see sights you never even knew about. A trip to the Louvre won't surprise you but journeys like these will.

Pine 1/3

Starting from the ground up, here are some pine tree roots. They often curl on the surface like this, as by sheer joy of decorating the ground, but the tree also always has a center root that goes straight and deep down. (Yes you _can_ have it all.) These beauties I encountered walking the Åsarna trail in Arjeplog, a very narrow, 5 km path straight out in lake Hornavan (Sweden's deepest lake). The trail passes by several bronze age settlements, and no wonder people always wanted to live here -- go check it out, and you'll get it. On the whole, I kinda fell for Arjeplog this time. Longing to go back.

A cheerful, cartoonish reindeer bust fills the frame, its oversized blue eyes wide and glossy with bright catchlights that make it look almost alive. A perfect little red nose sits front and center — shiny and round like Rudolph’s — and a jaunty Santa hat, plush white trim and pom-pom included, is cocked to one side atop the reindeer’s golden antlers. The face is painted with warm, creamy tones and a broad, friendly grin exposing a hint of tongue, giving the figure an innocent, playful expression. Around its neck hangs a black collar studded with round brass bells and a slightly larger bell that dangles at the throat, promising the soft jingle of holiday cheer.
Behind the figure, dense, deep-green fir branches create a rich, textured backdrop that contrasts with the glossy, smooth surface of the reindeer. Warm lighting skims across the plastic-like finish, accentuating highlights on the nose, antlers, and the rim of the hat while casting soft shadows into the pine boughs. The overall effect is festive and nostalgic — a whimsical holiday ornament frozen in a moment of bright, unapologetic joy.

City Preparing For Christmas – 11
Santa Claus’s Reindeer
Republic Square
Hyères, French Riviera

A cheerful, cartoonish reindeer head peers out from a nest of dark green fir branches, instantly conjuring a playful holiday mood. Its glossy, smooth surface catches the light: a bright red, bulbous nose dominates the face, set above an open, smiling mouth with a pink tongue visible. Big, sky-blue eyes with painted lashes give it an eager, friendly expression.
The reindeer's antlers are a warm golden-yellow, arcing upward like stylized flames, and it wears a small Santa hat—red felt trimmed in white—tipped jauntily to one side with a pompom. Around its neck is a black collar studded with round, gold accents that suggest bells or decorative studs. The surrounding evergreen boughs frame the figure snugly, their needles creating a textured, slightly shadowed backdrop that contrasts with the toy’s shiny, bright colors.
Soft, diffused lighting and a shallow depth of field keep focus on the reindeer's face while the greenery blurs into a cozy, festive wash. The overall effect is whimsical and nostalgic, like a classic holiday window display or a beloved seasonal decoration come to life.

A single matte‑sparkle bauble hangs from a fir branch, small and perfectly round, its red surface flecked with glitter that catches the light like tiny embers. The ornament’s silver cap and thin hook grip a short twig; a few needles brush against it, lending a sense of intimacy as if the tree itself is cradling the decoration.
The photograph is a close, soft-focused study: the foreground needles are crisply detailed while the background melts into a creamy bokeh of cool greens and soft blues, punctuated by warm, rosy highlights that halo the orb. The composition leans diagonally, following the branch, which guides the eye to the bauble as the natural focal point.
Overall the image feels quiet and contemplative — a small, solitary sparkle in the green hush of the tree, evoking the hush of a winter morning or the gentle calm of a holiday moment.

I am SO stealing this idea - knit tiny ornaments from scrap yarn! Maybe all-pastel socks & sweaters for my Ostara wreath, come March? So cute!
Great idea, pic also, is from ShelbyKnits, @shelbyknits.bsky.social ~

A small knitting project, nearly finished. It appears to be a tiny sweater, and the knitter is working on creating tiny sleeves with black double-point, silver-tipped, needles, maybe size 3 US. The sweater is salmon colored with a paler shade at the bottom.

Things used in everyday life are the real archaeological treasures! These sewing #needles were made from animal bone some 15,000 years ago. Some designs simply don't need to be improved, because form and functions were perfectly matched from the start. Form follows function!
Found in the Grotte du Placard à Vilhonneur (Charente).

The picture shows six needles of different sizes. They were made of bone resemble their modern descendants with an eye at one end and a tapered end.
