A strong #winter #storm system will bring plenty of #precipitation to the #Northland from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning.

In addition to heavy #snowfall and possible #icing, strong #winds will bring #blizzard conditions for some spots.

The following winter weather alerts will be in effect across parts of the Northland from the evening of Tuesday, February 17, 2026, through the morning of Thursday, February 19, 2026. A Blizzard Warning will be in place for the North Shore region. A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect for the Arrowhead, Twin Ports, and Bayfield Peninsula regions. A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for the Iron Range and Rainy River Basin regions, with an upgrade to either a Winter Storm Warning or Winter Weather Advisory expected by Tuesday afternoon.

Total snowfall from this winter storm system will be highest along the North Shore with 12 to 18-plus inches likely. The Arrowhead, Twin Ports, and Bayfield Peninsula regions will see 6 to 12 inches. The Rainy River Basin will see 5 to 10 inches. The Iron Range and Upper Peninsula regions will see 3 to 6 inches. The I-35 Corridor and northwest Wisconsin regions will see totals quickly decrease as one travels south away from Highway 2.

There is the potential for icing on roadways and surfaces from this storm system as it passes through Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. Locations along and south of Highway 2 could get a glaze to up to one-tenth of an inch of new ice accumulation.

Winds from this storm system will be strong Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. Gusts of 30 to 45 mph are likely across the Northland, with the North Shore seeing gusts up to 60 mph possible. This will lead to blowing and drifting of snow, reduced visibility, and blizzard conditions at times.

This is a landscape format photo of a trail taken during a winter ice fog. The coniferous tree in the shot forms an arch in the upper portion of the frame. Ice can be seen on the tree's needles. Anti-Icing Polar Bear Fur

Despite spending their lives in and around frigid water, snow, and ice, polar bears are rarely troubled by ice building up on their fur. This natural anti-icing property is one Inuits have long taken advantage of by using polar bear fur in hunting stools and sandals. In a new study, researchers looked at just how “icephobic” polar bear fur is and what properties make it so.

The key to a polar bear’s anti-icing is sebum — a mixture of cholesterol, diacylglycerols, and fatty acids secreted from glands near each hair’s root. When sebum is present on the hair, the researchers found it takes very little force to remove ice; in contrast, fur that had been washed with a surfactant that stripped away the sebum clung to ice.

The researchers are interested in uncovering which specific chemical components of sebum impart its icephobicity. That information could enable a new generation of anti-icing treatments for aircraft and other human-made technologies; right now, many anti-icing treatments use PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” that have major disadvantages to human and environmental health.
