Today in thrift store shopping, I bought this brand new cocktail smoking kit for $2.40. They obviously didn't know what it was. The torch alone is worth more than that.

The inside of a box showing a small torch, containers of pecan and oak chips, a tiny scoop, two small filters, whiskey stones and a wooden cocktail smoker.

I found an old GrapheneOS release which I just managed to install on my very old Pixel 3a.

Yes, I know the device is no longer supported and that it has security vulnerabilities. Yes, I know I can’t verify the release files. However, I am only planning to use the phone in my twenty years old campervan for offline OpenStreet maps and offline music player.

The car radio, while decent quality, is very difficult to use with no playlist support etc. That’s why I have been using the 3a with Ubuntu Touch, but GrapheneOS is so much more intuitive.

I bought this extra sturdy basket in mint condition (no frays, doesn’t wobble when set down) while thrifting at Goodwill recently. I had no idea what to do with it, but I think my mini teddy bear family is settling in nicely.

Three mini teddy bears sitting in a sturdy low-profile basket. From left to right bear colors: Blue, black, green.Black teddy bear named "The End" with gold bow and tiny fireworks graphic sits solitary in the sturdy basket.

On my first thrifting expedition of the year I found this folding, formed steel chair for $5. I already have a folding formed steel mosaic table I can pair it with to make an outdoor reading nook in the summer.
The more I look at it, the more I love it. Right now it's next to the wood stove in the kitchen so I can read while keeping an eye on dinner.
Edited to please a stickler in our midst ;)

A black, formed steel folding chair. The seat is woven metal. The back has a terra cotta mosaic with a butterfly in the center. It is pictured on a light grey tile floor next to a black cast iron wood stove.

ProTip: if you love vintage shopping, 'tis the season. After Christmas, when people have received nice new gifts, they make room for their new stuff by getting rid of other stuff.

At yesterday's Repair Cafe where I volunteer each month I helped a visitor make the transition from Windows 10 to Linux. Her first comment on seeing #LinuxMint (Cinnamon edition) was "this looks so much cleaner!".

Also, going back to explore more about #Emmabuntus given their new release EmmaDE6 has a a big focus on accessibility improvements: emmabuntus.org/emmade6-1-00-a-

Been given one of those pretty, but inefficient, wood pellet glass rocket patio heaters as an early christmas gift. Looks cool, but is wasting a lot of it’s heat and I don’t want to buy pellets.

My thought is it’s an excuse to finally build a rocket mass heater for my garage. Anyone messed around with these yet?

Yes, it's so simple... and it works!

Receiver of an old grey Dutch PTT telephone. A golden 3.5mm trrs plug is soldered on the curly wire, so it fits a laptop or mobile phone, works like a handheld headset.

Tutukaka’s harbour & the adjacent Ngunguru bay + river were first surveyed in 1837 by HMS Buffalo; the Royal Navy sought out Kauri, prized timber for warship topmasts & spars. Patrolling the harbour’s shallows today are Bathytoshia brevicaudata | oru | short-tailed stingray (📷1); not sure if the individual we nicknamed “Ray Charles” on our last visit still swims. Like the pōhutukawa, the Phormium tenax | harakeke | flax around the marina is blooming (📷2); stalks can reach 4–5m & the #flowers will be a major source of nectar for tūī & bellbirds over the summer. Meanwhile, house-sitting has provided opportunity to source/ sample local #Kiwi favourites as well as obtain less traditional supplies for the festive season, such as sauerkraut to support the #German folklore of eating it on New Year’s Day, ensuring prosperity (📷3). It’s also meant time to play with old tech kept in storage with parents e.g. this 13 year-old MacBook Pro has gained a new lease of life running @elementary OS 8 & will be reborn as a CD media streamer (📷4). #reuse #repurpose

I saw this vintage bottle in an antique store this past weekend and this idea for a flask popped into my head. #LeatherCraft #maker #flask #HandMade #vintage #recycle #reuse #repurpose

A vintage ten sided bottle with a flanged top placed on a marble surface in front of a black backdrop. The same bottle turned into a flask with a cork closure. It has a snap on top containing two shot glasses. This view shows the backside with horizontal stitching up the length of the bottle and the snap top opened with one shot glass still in the top and one sitting beside the flask. The front of the flask with the top snapped closed. There is copper foiled lettering on the front reading, "Ethanol Emporium Est. 2015"

I did some more things with wires and batteries today. Procrastinating about doing more 'real' work today so I'll mow some grass instead.

Instead of visiting the Kittery outlet stores and enriching the chain stores whose employees we subsidize, we've just spent three days combing through Southern Maine's antique, vintage and thrift stores and we'll do it again when given the opportunity.
