is one of my favorite . I grew up around it, and this is probably the best season to showcase it. Fresh bright growth, and rows of little bell-shaped all over the place.

Found a that seems to enjoy it as much as I do.

Went on Saturday after an errand with my wife, who pointed out a tiny !

I've never seen terrestrial before in the area, usually I just see the ones that poke their heads out of lakes and ponds to say hi. This dude, less than an inch long, was chilling on some , about 3 feet in the air.

Also pictured, a little spider hanging out on a small flower by the trailhead.

Brilliant green salal leaves, with a small green frog happily chilling toward the center of the frame.A tiny spider makes her way down the stem of a small red and white flower.

Spiky Salal- A close-up of some ripening salal berries (and a couple of visitors) found in Belcarra this morning.

A macro photograph of some ripening salal berries. The berries are a bright green, and many small spines can be seen pushing their way out of the fruit. Other salal berry clusters can be seen in the background of the photo, and several extremely small insects can be seen on the stems of the berries in the foreground.

(1/2) Went for a short hike today at in . Gorgeous day, with some beautiful views. A few shots from the trail. Nice view of Rainier as well.

A view of a distant coastline, seen through the trees from a trail vantage point. It's a crisp beautiful day, and above the coast you can make out shrouded Mt. Hey #PacificNorthWest people! Do any of you know how to #cultivate #salal ? Or how to best clean and process the #berries ? I have some questions.

#Salal berries may not be the most flavorful of fruits, but they are among the easiest to pick. And they give a great purple color to other foods.

One of my forest joys at the moment is that salal berries are ripe. If you live on the west coast of North America, perhaps you know this plant, and maybe you’re nibbling on the berries, too! They’re not super sweet, like blackberries, nor zingy like raspberries. I find them tasty, though, and could eat them by the bucketful.

My dog likes them too. I pick a little branch of berries, then nibble them off. The next little branch is for him, and he does the same.

Here is a green branch, with six berries hanging from it. They are little spheres, oh, maybe a tiny bit more oval shaped than spherical. Most of them dark, almost black. The two on the far left are still pink and light purple, because they’re not ripe yet. If you zoom in on a berry, you’ll see it has tiny hairs on it, but you’ll only notice that in a photo, not if you pick berries to eat.

#Salal #flowers will become #food #berries soon 🥰

#SalalBerries are a major #FoodSource for #BritishColumbia #FirstNations - can be dried & made into cakes. Fruit leathers can be made by blending berries & spreading flat in a pan & drying in sun or oven. Berries can also be used to create a dark blue or purple dye. Branches & leaves of salal are used to line cooking pits & provide flavour. Leaves are used to cover cuts and wounds.

Native #Salal blooms (#Gaultheria shallon) are at their peak on the SW #Washington coast this week - such a gorgeous plant.

Many tiny pink bell-shaped blooms on a native Salal bush (Gaultheria shallon) are seen against a wooden fence, with trees and a patch of blue sky behind in the upper right.

Salal, mossy rocks, and fern under the trunk of a service berry

Of the things that grow wild in your region: is there some plant that people pick for the floral industry?

This is salal, which grows on the west coast of BC, Canada, and down the coast to California as well. It’s used in bouquets, and is prized by florists. And that’s why there are salal pickers in my local forest, harvesting this stuff (illegally) by the truckload.

This is a branch of salal. We see five leaves. They’re dark green, mostly oval but pointed a bit on the tips. Each leaf is maybe half the size of the palm of your hand.
