@landley @gettie that being said I've yet to see any competition since #Cyrix got stomped out, #Transmeta failed and #VIA sold parts of #CentaurTechnology to #Zhaoxin which now fab their stuff on 16nm surplus'd #TSMC nodes that were slated for export to MCST but got embargo'd for obvious reasons...

Not that any of their chips were competitive past the #Cx586, and nowadays it'll be faster to run #86Box on a #RISCv than old silicon...

Still, it angers me since @OS1337 aims to be a foundation [to at least be able to recover data or backup/restore ancient hardware one can't get to run elsewhere]…

Tho at least #Linux 6.6.x as #LTS-#Kernel release will still get fixes for quite some time...

Creo recordar que mi primer #PC fue con una #CPU #Cyrix 486 DX 22 a 66 MHz. No recuerdo exactamente la época. Fue la típica oferta de tienda de barrio con torre, monitor e impresora que se destilaba en la época.

Tengo la sensación que visto a día de hoy fue un timo de cojones. Lo que sí recuerdo fue que decía la oferta: monitor #SVGA. Era un #VGA. No sé si esto es correcto o no a día de hoy. Sé que no superaba determinada resolución el monitor. Resolución SVGA, creo.

Quite a nice article on #Cyrix, who were a fabless chip designer who make Intel x86-compatible processors in the early days (up to Pentium level).
From that time I still have more fond memories the #IBM "Blue Lightning" #BlueLightning chips and the #NexGen (First to use a RISC core for running x86 code - and subsequently bought out by #AMD)

I do buy a few things off of eBay, but mainly I just window shop. Today I just saw the exact model of my last AT case, a mid-tower which at the time housed a late socket 3 board with a Cyrix 5x86-100 overclocked at 120MHz.

Not buying it, but simply seeing brought back fond memories of LAN parties and mid to late 90s games.

I do recall those days. In the mid 1990s, I had built a couple Cyrix-based computers, and I was initially happy with their price/performance. I had a 5x86 80Mhz, and IIRC a 6x86 133+. At some point, I realized the sluggish #Cyrix floating point was holding it back with the next generation of games, so I switched to Intel for my next build.

Also, I had a decent job by then, so I didn't have to settle for a bottom-budget rig.
