How cold is it today? Cold enough that my little elm tree—located between several houses and near sources of food and water—is sprouting woodpeckers.
Winter has arrived with a vengeance. Thankfully, we don’t get a lot of snow and sleet (eleven-and-a-half inches now) or many morning lows in the single digits in Maryland (9 degrees currently), so I’m choosing #DelightOverDarkness and focusing on winter’s beauty.

Raptor rapture! Got a photo of a sharp-shinned #hawk (per the Merlin app) sitting in my plum tree. Not a great photo, but the hawk is focused on the neighbor's bird feeder.
This guy/gal may explain the feathers in and around the spruce tree in the front yard.

Water is a draw on a freezing cold day.
( 3° F / -16° C.)
Today is definitely a day for hunkering down. Temperatures will hover at or below 0°F all day, in spite of a clear blue sky and full sun. There are usually gangs of birds at my feeders, but this morning I’ve only seen a few brave juncos come down to grab a quick bite and then disappear up into the thickest parts of the cedar and juniper trees.
We have a visitor.
Our last duck, a hen, was raising a ruckus so Summer and I investigated.
The hawk, I don't know which type, was about twelve feet from her pen.
Most birds will abandon a pursuit of our poor old solitary duck when Summer bounds on the scene.
This bird seemed unperturbed.
The hen is well protected in her pen so the hawk finally gave up.

Red-bellied woodpecker pausing on a rusted fence post, watching the field below with sharp focus and zero patience. A flash of red, black, and white against the soft green background. 🪶 #Woodpecker #BirdPhotography #WildlifePhotography #NatureDetails #BackyardBirds #WoodSpritePhoto

Nuthatches on Parade. My new favorite little buddy is the Red-breasted Nuthatch. I'd never seen one until this year.
It's really striking how small it is. Just 2/3 the size of the White-breasted Nuthatch.
Today, one of each kind posed for a picture.

A male Northern Cardinal bursts into flight, wings flared as he cuts through the backyard canopy. Bright, fast, and impossible to miss. #NorthernCardinal #BirdPhotography #WildlifePhotography #BackyardBirds #NatureInMotion

At 9° F / -13° C and windy, it's a good day for a through-the-window photo.
This large chunky sparrow is a Harris's Sparrow. I tend to have a few of these hanging around each winter.
The Harris's Sparrow is definitely a mid-continent bird.
Small bird perched on the lower ledge of a wooden bird feeder hanging from a tree branch, with dark tree trunks and foliage filling the forest background.
