Awesome day birding around RSPB Lakenheath Fen, and then (eventually, thanks to a road closure) dropping in to the “swan feed” at WWT Welney Washes.

Did I see anything “good” you ask? Well, I say, I saw many amazing flappy things, including lots of Marsh Harriers, two Common Cranes, and a Bittern (pictured).

A bittern stands on the frozen surface of a lake. Its brown and beige patterned plumage contrasts gently with the cool blue tones of the ice and blends with the dry reeds in the foreground. The bird holds its bill slightly upward, a typical camouflage posture that conveys calm, focus, and winter stillness.

This is a Bittern. I’d never heard of these birds before, but they are interesting… First off, they stretch their necks upward when they’re trying to hide, because the stripes along their necks and torso appear to melt into the tall grasses, helping to disguise them.

And secondly, their bird call is deep and gurgling, almost like a glug of water down a drain. It far over the wetlands they call home, and stands out because it’s so low in register.

We have them here in Humboldt County in northern California along the Redwood Coast. This bird was requested by a patron who stopped by my art booth this last year.

It’s entirely #HumanMade. I use Procreate on my iPad Pro, and draw each stroke by hand. Here’s the speedpaint: https://makertube.net/w/6HwSDNNfoR2AFbiYXFCXeC

And here’s the livestream recording of when I made it: https://makertube.net/w/gvF2jbFYVwqnRcF1cp5R7B

It’s available as a greeting card on my Goimagine art shop, but unfortunately only for US customers right now. Here’s the link: https://goimagine.com/bittern-single-bird-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

And finally, a link to my website, where my livestream is embedded from MakerTube, and I have a blog: https://www.coreyartusimagery.com/

Finished this yesterday: a Bittern. They’re common where I live here in northern California—we have a lot of freshwater marshes along the Redwood Coast.

This was requested by a lady who stopped by my booth this year at one of the events I vended at.

I do all my work in Procreate on my iPad Pro. at no point to I use any “generative assistance” in the process. It’s #HumanMade.

I print all my own greeting cards and prints. You can find this one here: goimagine.com/bittern-single-b

That brown blob then sprouted a head!

As I suspected, it was a #Bittern holding onto bunches of reeds up above the water line.

I put my head back into reception and told them, all sorts of action broke out. There were people rushing to get telescopes and cameras!

It stayed there perched in the reeds and swaying in the wind for a while. 20 minutes maybe longer.

There’s a crowd gathered now (about 10 including me and Bee)

Once Bittern, Twice Shy...

Botaurus stellaris
Eurasian Bittern

The Bittern is a secretive bird, seldom seen in the open as it prefers to skulk in reed beds and thick vegetation near water bodies.

Just as I finished taking some photos of the Kingfisher a pair of Bittern took flight!

It was amazing to see them and we were so happy to finally catch sight of them, we’d visited wetlands and fens for a couple of years even hearing them boom but not seeing them.

In all the excitement I forgot to raise my shutter speed so there’s not many clear photos of them but these two turned out ok.

Bitterns have made a remarkable comeback in the UK, with numbers rising by 20% in just 12 months. Conservation efforts have restored reedbed habitats, leading to a record-breaking 283 booming males recorded in 2024. Visit nature reserves like RSPB Leighton Moss, Ham Wall, and Otmoor to hear their famous booming call.
