#Hazy sky to persist as Canadian #WildfireSmoke and #SaharanDust invade US

More smoke and dust are ahead for the northern, eastern and southern states into mid-June, as AccuWeather meteorologists continue to track Canadian wildfires and dust sweeping in from Africa.

By Bill Deger, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Published Jun 5, 2025 11:10 AM EDT | Updated Jun 6, 2025

"The haze is here to stay. Rounds of smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires, as well as dust blowing off Sub-Saharan Africa, will continue to envelop portions of the United States into the summer, say AccuWeather meteorologists.

"Recent rounds of smoke blowing across the northern and eastern U.S. over the last week resulted in a hazy sky, poor air quality and vibrant sunrises and sunsets. While the smoke has mostly retreated back into Canada as of late this week, additional episodes are expected through the summer, with the first expected early next week.

"Meanwhile, the Saharan dust will result in similar effects in the South, mostly in Florida and areas surrounding the Gulf and southwestern Atlantic. A recent round of dust blowing off of Africa will also have the effect of putting a temporary lid on potential tropical development."

The highest concentration of smoke Thursday night and Friday morning will be over the Arrowhead and Upper Peninsula regions.Eventually, this highest concentration will shift more west and cover other parts of the Northland throughout the day Friday, which will include the Twin Ports, northwest Wisconsin, and the Iron Range, as wind direction slowly shifts to the north as a cold front passes through the region. A decreasing wind speed Friday night and shift in direction to the south throughout the weekend will allow the smoke to dissipate by early next week.

WILDFIRE SMOKE RETURNS:

Thanks to a shift in #wind direction, the #Northland will see a couple big bursts of #wildfire #smoke from #fires burning near #Winnipeg over the next two days.

Skies will be #hazy as #air quality levels will become #unhealthy for most people when you are outside.

A model run for surface smoke clearly shows a large concentration of it moving southeast into parts of the Northland by noon Thursday. It will remain heavy throughout Thursday, with a second burst of heavy concentration coming through Friday. An Air Quality Alert has been issued for Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties for Thursday, May 29, 2025, and Friday, May 30, 2025.
