New promoter snags #Oxbow #RiverStage brand name , #ConcertSeries that originally brought top tier acts like Van Morrison, Heart & Bonnie Raitt to downtown #Napa , but after several years, permit was shut down in #OxbowCommons Park over #noise complaints from nearby million dollar #WineCountry properties in 2023. New promoter will attempt return of outdoor shows to #NapaValley, but use far less lovely local college football field.

Fluvial System Block Diagrams
--
I was looking to understand a fluvial system the other day, up in the high Arctic, as I looked at 3DEP remote sensed elevation data⊠I have always been fascinated by the how geology, water, weather shapes a landscape, including erosion (aka geomorphology if you will) â and realized how very much value fluvial block diagrams have as we try to conceptualise what has, is and will happen(ed.)

Vida Blue feels like watching a baseball game in the â70s with your alcoholic dad. You can hear the Oakland crowd go wild, and Dadâs drunken groans echo around the wood-slatted family room. You wince as he tightens his fists. You can hear your mom making beef stroganoff in the kitchen with the radio going, smell the weighty hamburger meat right before she adds the roux and a healthy helping of apathy. Itâll make your bones grow, she whispers when you ask. The fuck you say, your dad growls, crumpling the can of his eighth beer and throwing it at the trash canâs broken teeth. You try to watch the game and witness Dodgers hitter Van Joshua out by Rollie Fingers on a groundout to end the series. Oaklandâs Swinginâ Aâs in a threepeat, 4-1. Mom and Dad start throwing fists and divorce threats like thereâs a World Series at stake, and you canât tell if you should cheer for the Aâs or feel sad for the Dodgers because your parents are fighting over beef stroganoff and growing boys.
Vida Blue, Mamaleekâs ninth full-length, mourns the 2023 death of member Eric Livingston â paralleled by the Oakland Athleticsâ relocation to Las Vegas. It reflects on legendary pitcher and namesake Vida Blueâs legacy â and Livingstonâs. In honor and homage, Vida Blue takes the squelching and jangling hemorrhaging cyst-blues template of 2022âs impressive Diner Coffee, painting a â70âs folk-, blues-, prog- and jazz-rock sheen across it with reckless abandon. Bass lines are the backbone of each track, frequently shattered and crippled in flute or brass explosions; jazzy southern rock and metallic licks drool across the bandstand; abrasive noise and groaning post-punk drive their teeth into the proceedings. Ultimately, Vida Blue is everything that makes Mamaleek completely divisive â and utterly brilliant.
Vida Blue does a good job capitalizing upon Diner Coffee, unsteadying the Oxbow-esque blues-rock foundation and its avant-garde elements. It adds to Mamaleekâs freeform figure, enhanced by the brothersâ unhinged roars, agonizing groans, and disconcerting spoken word. From the opening lick of âTegucigalpa,â a ZZ Top-esque guitar drawl colliding with the Jethro Tullâs soothing flute, it does its damnedest to draw you in with its plethora of avant-garde stylings only to pervert them into a cheese ball of rot. While the elevator music of âVileness Slimâ and the funky bass lines of âVida Blueâ and âHatful of Rainâ are cracked by brass and flute ejaculations, crescendos of discordant plonks and nostalgic chords seamlessly war in an undecided battle â elements like chimes, harmonica, backing choirs, noise, and even whistling adding to the trademark jangle. Big band orchestra a la Glenn Miller sprawl across tracks like âVida Blueâ and interlude âMomentary Laughter Concealed from My Eyesâ add a tantalizing question mark in sudden yearning romance.
While Diner Coffeeâs foundation of grotesque jazz lent itself to Miles Davis-esque moments of modal clarity, Vida Blue is much more fluid in its expressions, a grin of melody that shakes hands with the surrounding chaos â landmarks likewise including a tasteful dose that adds texture and nuance to the ugliness. âAncient Souls, No Longer Sorrowfulâ features a droning southern rock line that fuses into infectious brass explosions before collapsing into a piano line that morphs from wildly improvised to suddenly beautiful, before returning to a Tom Waits-esque doo-wop bastardization. âBlack Pudding Served at the Horn of the Altarâ features an off-kilter post-metal rhythm that Isis would be proud of beneath a slowed pedal effect of Rage Against the Machineâs âKilling in the Name Of,â achieving a strangely liturgical aura through its ominous chanting. Finally, ten-minute behemoth âLegion of Bottom Deck Dealersâ feels ironically the most traditional, Joy Division-esque moans harmonizing atop a strange fumbling of glitching metallic guitar riffs that swing between beautiful and discordant.
As always, Mamaleek features a lot to unpack â discordant, freeform, and downright painful at times. Vida Blue is its most glorious train wreck yet, collapsing upon the fucked up foundation laid by Diner Coffee. In ways that pay homage to their fallen bandmate and to the city that moved on without the Aâs lefty pitcher, the actâs ninth offering feels simultaneously more maniacal, more exploratory â yet the jangling trademark works stunningly in its favor â and, dare I say, Mamaleek feels more human. But as the saying goes, as the sounds of both baseball and domestic discord fade, youâre left with only the memories.

âI do feel, under the weight of irreconcilable differences, none of them aesthetic or musical, that I now must leave OXBOW. Recent circumstances have caused me several dark nights of the soul and while it feels/seems crazy to kill my involvement in that which I started, I think it necessary so that maybe a kind of healing can take place that will make OXBOW a comfortable place for me to be again. If not, then not.â

Schade. .. RIP.
Couch Slut â You Could Do It Tonight Review
By Dear Hollow
Couch Slut does not concern itself with the prettier things in life. While the noise rock tag may be a dead giveaway, the unconvinced need only to look at the cover of the Brooklyn five-pieceâs 2014 debut My Life as a Woman (not at work) to understand. The monotone theme is a spirit likewise captured in fourth full-length You Could Do It Tonight, displaying a humanity succumbing to vice, filth, and weed â as the styleâs stalwarts in Cherubs, Oxbow and Brainbombs have long done. But thereâs something distinctly unhinged about Couch Slut, whether it be the jerky hardcore rhythms, dissonant squeals, and deceptively placid passages of simmering menace, the blasts of straight-up noise that feels as furious as its content, or frontwoman Megan Osztrositsâ manic shrieks, banshee howls, and ominous mutterings. Like its predecessors, You Could Do It Tonight dives headlong into darker things through the lens of urban alienation.
Unlike its predecessors, however, You Could Do It Tonight flies off the rails at nearly every turn. Compromising solidarity through its thirty-eight-minute runtime through a variety of vicious tricks, no two tracks retaining the same technique, Couch Slut dives into surreal storytelling dedicated to self-harm and suicide. Using a thick haze of noise, combined with skronky guitar work and dark bass and helmed by the manically captivating spoken stories and Osztrositsâ manic shrieks, You Could Do It Tonight is an otherworldly and absolutely menacing trip to drug-fueled insanity.
The two faces of You Could Do It Tonight, in spite of different stylistic decisions throughout, can be pictured as simmering and unhinged. âCouch Slut Lewis,â âLaughing and Crying,â and âWilkinsonâs Swordâ plod carefully and deliberately with an Oxbow-esque lounging pace through a noisy backdrop with memorable guitar licks throughout erupting into dissonant squawks, while Osztrositsâ shrieks describe rape and self-harm with raw and unflinching detail. The heart on their sleeves were traded for weed on 4/20, so any compassion is left in a haze of shock and smoke. Explosions of noise envelope tracks like âOde to Jimboâ and âEnergy Crystals for Healingâ in a wave somehow larger than the already mammoth riffs dominating, while devastating roars of guests Zach Ezrin of Imperial Triumphant and Doug Moore of Pyrrhon add a distinct edge to âCouch Slut Lewisâ and âDownhill Racer.â Like any good noise rock, there is a constant curtain of sound draped across Couch Slutâs sound, weaponized to a vicious and unhinged degree.
While the album at large maintains that trademark insanity, there are three instances in particular that challenge the listener. âPresidential Welcomeâ is a grimy jazz interlude straight outta Vile Luxury, starkly decadent after the climactic and filthy predecessor. This predecessor, âThe Donkey,â features Osztrositsâ spoken word with dissonant squawks and a tapestry of feedback, lyrics describing a particular nightmare in which a couple make a stop-motion horror film, and the guy nearly saws off his arm to get enough blood for their film â the antics are described with unnerving conversational casualness. Meanwhile, closer âThe Weaversville School for Boysâ utilizes spoken word atop pulsing beats and warbling squeals, describing an urban legend of three boys massacring the entire population of their school and vanishing, as our drugged narrator stumbles upon them laughing at the sky. Itâs all unnerving.
In its themes and mood, You Could Do it Tonight can summed up by the lyrics in âDownhill Racer:â âMy walls build moisture, enough to drown. I watch the water where he went down. My legâs infected from all these scratches.â Couch Slut has no clear motive aside from absolute grime and maximum discomfort. While horror and mutilation are common themes throughout metal- and noise rock-adjacent lyrics, thereâs an obscene absurdity that collides with jarring normality through these stories: as if rape, self-harm, and murder were all just everyday facets of urban life. You can trust no one. Interpreting Couch Slut and You Could Do It Tonight is a complex feat â itâs not an easy album, hardly an enjoyable one. But it is an impressively uncomfortable drug-induced listen full of captivating storytelling through effective spoken word and a vocal performance from hell, stinging instrumentals, and oily grime â like all good noise rock steeped in misery and sarcasm.
