My 1 bed bachelor pad has a portable aircon, but no window vent dingus, so Iâve decided to make one from wood offcuts and a 3D printed socket for the adaptor at the end of the hose thatâs supposed to attach to said dingus.
I could have bought one from Amazon for $40 delivered but ::waves arms at late stage capitalism::.
Not just for cost or delivery/fuel waste reasons â this is a continued expression of my addition to the â3/5/x Râsâ: âAdaptâ.
Not only am I utilising offcuts, but also iKEA shelf upright extensions, in a way I can take them apart to return them to original purpose.
Yes, I hoard offcuts and extras of things like IKEA shelf systems (Gorn and Sten for the win!) â I do that because those trees have already been cut down, and theyâre often milled to a âgood enoughâ spec for such projects.
Offcuts often get used in multiple ways over their life with me. I lament leaving bed slats on hard waste pickup nights! And yes, I have rescued some of those and used them in the past.
Iâm not making much of a difference in the grand scheme of things, but it feels good to be creative in reuse.
Itâs funny, my fave grandparent (Pa) and my second father-in-law (one of natureâs gentlemen), who both lived through the depression (my Pa as an adult and father, my father-in-law as a child) exemplified this âhoardâ/reuse/adapt philosophy as well.
No real point to this post except to perhaps encourage others to adapt whatâs already around them.
There is a real sense of accomplishment in making something with your own hands which I commend to everyone.
