#ReduceRepairReuseRecycle

@BicycleBen It's an interesting article, but it doesn't offer any good solutions. I still don't know how to dispose of worn out clothes that are not made from natural fibres. I'll plan not to buy anything new unless it's cotton or wool, but such stuff is hard to find.

I wasn't really planning on running yet another version of #Linux, but over the last couple of days I have been trying to find something interesting to run on an old 32bit laptop.
#HaikuOS keeps hanging after a few minutes (I have been trying to use it and keep it updated for a while as I loved #BeoS, but have run out of patience), #plan9front was too hardcore and you don't even get a Glenda boot logo 😞.

#ReactOS wouldn't even get to the installer when booting off CD (an old version worked in the past), and OpenBSD doesn't even come with a program launcher by default.

@q4os installed easily and worked fine on my old HP nc6230.
It has a nice lot of up-to-date software, a simple installer, nice themes, and seems stable so far 🥳

Random question for the Fediverse. I am reupholstering a chair with new foam. What should I be doing with the old foam? (aside from landfilling it) Anything?

Fucking Forbes:

"If it’s not eligible, do not try to upgrade your PC — instead look at recycling or landfill."

Yeah, why try upgrading? Upgrading is for losers.

wtf?

I've painted the shed and the fence this morning, planted a few veg, and now it's time to build a new wheel for my two-wheeled recumbent.

The freehub in the existing wheel has decided to be "free" more often than it should be. Sometimes it works just fine, and other times when I pedal the pedals just spin without doing anything. I'll probably take the hub apart and see if it's salvagable, but first I'll get the new wheel in use.

It's an old bike, about 27 years old now, but it suits me. It's comfortable, nice to ride, and I'm used to it. This is the fourth time I've rebuilt the rear wheel. The other occasions were twice due to wearing down the rim too much when braking, once when the original hub failed, and once when someone in the UK drove into me on my commute to work and destroyed the wheel (luckily I wasn't hurt on that particular occasion).

I have a fair number of these perfectly good and reasonably inexpensive rims in stock should any of you want one:

Don't ask why but I removed an old macbook pro’s (2020 Intel) screen and using it as a headless machine. However now I am curious if I can get some display board adapter or something to convert that screen into a small monitor.

You can get that kind of thing for older macbooks like 2011 here aliexpress.com/item/1005008094

Relaxing and dismantling a linen shift that tore in three different parts of the back during the night. (Again I question what I do in my sleep!)

Into one pile go the nice big rectangles of still good fabric, to become parts of garments. Into one small pile go the little rectangles of still good fabric, to become patches for mending. And into a third little pile go all the cut off seam allowances, becoming cat toys.

“The discovery uses tiny micro batteries to break down the lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese from a battery, before using an amino acid to extract the metals.

“The use of glycine as the amino acid avoids using harsh chemicals for the recycling process, [and avoids] the creation of toxic byproducts.

“The newly developed system is able to recover 99.99 per cent of the lithium, 96.8 per cent of the nickel, 92.35 per cent of the cobalt and 90.59 per cent of the manganese from old batteries in just 15 minutes.”

Did my first phone #repair with an @iFixit kit last night. My Pixel 6 screen was cracked after dropping it, but it's good as new now!

I really enjoyed fixing my own device and feeling the pride of my fancy new screen. Removing glue is a frustrating job, but I can highly recommend the overall process!

Ordered replacement parts from the LBS, to arrive at some undetermined future time (for pickup at the store). The cost of parts (of course) is pricey, but again -- I am NOT doing this to acquire a new bicycle, I am doing this for the process of restoring the bicycle (and learning... plus, repairing stuff is therapeutic). i.e. it's the trip... not the destination. #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle #bikerepair #bike #schwinn

In today's episode of USED IS BETTER THAN NEW

2014 Specialized Sirrus Comp ($100) vs. Walmart Crappy Bike ($319.99)

(the Specialized had an original MSRP of $1100 back in 2014 -- likely you'll want to invest in new tires/tubes/tuneup).

Old, used, high quality bicycles are so much better quality than new stuff being sold at mass market retailers... I feel sorry for the kids who aren't getting a used top notch bike which has been repaired vs. getting a crap new bike. #BikeTooter #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle

I've stopped using bottled shampoo/conditioner/body wash. We switched back from dishwasher pods to the good-old powder type in a cardboard box. Ajax is back, spray cleaner is out. Laundry soap is now a sheet type. Changing for #noplastic is easy, and often cheaper. Now I feel grossed out in the shampoo isle in store. #plastic #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle

I try not to use single-use plastic, and the plastic food wrap is one of them. I finally ran out of the roll we had for at least eight years. Checked the yardage; 275 ft. That makes 34+ ft per year. It's still a lot! I will do better, by not buying a new roll. #plastic #reuse #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle
