#refraction

As the sun slowly climbed higher, the mist began to settle. What once floated invisibly through the air became droplets — tiny beads of water forming along the delicate threads of spiderwebs.

And then the light found them.

Each droplet acted like a miniature lens, bending and reflecting the morning light. This is refraction at work: light changing direction as it passes through water, turning simple dew into a constellation of bright points. What is nearly invisible in shadow becomes suddenly radiant under the right angle of light.

For a brief moment, the forest revealed a hidden structure — geometry spun overnight, now outlined in light.

Same place, same camera, same settings. Just a little later in time… and an entirely different world.

Glendalough in a Drop. Spotted an opportunity for something different here on a rather damp day at Glendalough. That place is just so magical!

A close-up, eye-level shot of a dark tree branch stretching horizontally across the top of the frame. The bark is textured and covered in patches of pale green lichen. A single, clear water droplet hangs from the centre of the branch, refracting a tiny, inverted image of the landscape. The background is a soft, out-of-focus view of a V-shaped valley with a lake reflecting the grey sky and russet-coloured mountains.
(Beer) Glass 🍺 for #fotovorschlag "Objekte, die mit "G" beginnen oder so aussehen" / "Objects beginning with "G" or looking like it"

I'm not doing too great again, (it's grand honestly, just ✨chronic illness✨ stuff), and I'm running out of "good" photos so you're going to be getting the bad photos or reposts as I've run out of material. 😂
However, if anyone has any ideas of fun photos that you can do at home (with not too much extertion) I would be really grateful! Thank you! 🫂♥️✨

The photo is of a distorted reflection of a street scene with a person on a bike, as seen through a glass of beer.
The reflection has a grand, yellow building facade with a colonnade. On the street, blurred figures (it's just one person reflected a few times) on a bike are visible. The reflections are warped and fragmented due to the curvature and thickness of the glass.

GN fam! A calving glacier made of safety glass on a window pane in an open container at night #WinterVibes Fascinating #physics: #reflections, #refraction #ALText: #strongerTogether, #inclusion:) #abstractArt #minimalism #EastCoastKin #PhotographyIsArt #JanuArty2026 #ArtYear #PhotographersofBluesky

Three characteristically shaped shards have broken off from a large piece of safety glass. The safety glass rests on dew-covered window glass, which reflects the night sky. The container holding the glass waste is illuminated by white LED light. The safety glass vaguely resembles ice, the individual shards icebergs, and the droplet-covered black glass plate a body of water.

Yep there is, @soph0517.bsky.social‬ and thank you for sharing this great take! Faszinating #physics: #reflections, #refraction and surface tension of the #rainDrops #AlphabetChallenge #WeekAforAbstract #EastCoastKin #macro #MacroPhotography

Several raindrops lie on the back of a green oak leaf lying on the ground. They reflect their surroundings, a forest path, and act like magnifying glasses.

I illuminated a block of ice at night with blue light and placed a small glass sphere (diameter about 3 cm) in front of it, which created a point reflection.

A round piece of ice, resting on top of a black shard of glass, is illuminated from the side by the sun. Countless tiny bubbles rise very slowly within the ice, leaving traces of their movement. The bubbles reflect the shard and the light. Some bubbles shimmer with spectral colours due to refraction. A tiny, light green piece of moss, frozen to the lower part of the piece of ice, and its reflection can be seen on the left of the image. The ice piece is reflected, partially distorted, in the black glass that is covered with a thin film of ice and water. A narrow ridge at the edge of the ice reflects the blue of the sky.

Atmospheric refraction, due to the different temperature/altitude profile in the atmosphere at different times of day...makes distant mountains appear taller or shorter.

The attached photo is a comparison of what I shot yesterday afternoon and this morning. The camera was set up within inches of the same location for both shots, and those mountains are between 50 and 120 miles away...so I'm saying that any parallax effect from camera location is essentially zero.

I have annotated with arrows where it's easy to make a comparison of how the near and far ridge lines overlap differently in the two photos.

Imagine the care that was needed to conduct surveys before the GPS/GNSS era:

"The Great Theodolite built by Troughton & Simms in London stood nearly 1.5m high, had a horizontal circle one meter in diameter, and could read angles to a single second of arc. Moving it required 30 porters and sometimes elephants."

"The reduction of Nicolson’s observations was a colossal task. Each ray from each station had to be corrected for instrumental error, for temperature and pressure, and for the curvature of the Earth. Above all, they needed to correct for atmospheric refraction, which at those distances could amount to six or seven minutes of arc and change from hour to hour."
