Wir haben Internet. Sort of.

A day that starts with a #clabretro upload and promises of D&D later in the day? Not a bad day at all.

This time we're netbooting OS/2 Warp.

@vga256 The Cisco 2500 is a mighty box for its time, and for sure it can route faster than a LC475 – if you’re running Mac OS on the Mac and not some BSD.

But in terms of raw CPU performance, the LC’s 68040/25 runs circles around an 68030/25, it is 2-3 times faster due to the large 8 KB L1 cache and optimizations.

I got an #analog #rotary #dialphone #Vorzimmerapparat 38" by "VEB #Fernmeldetechnik Nordhausen", used in a two-#extension-boss-secretary-#pbx, and #modded it to work on public #phone lines (#POTS), while giving the existing user interface elements meaningful uses:

* Faintly glowing LED while on hook and flashing while #ringing
* Buttons: Earth, flash, mute microphone

@steely_glint @voltur In terms of people I know: @hanshuebner was certainly a "creative" user of X.25 back in the day and still plays with it today, primarily in the context of VAX machines, AFAICT. #retronetworking

upstream #linux #kernel developers talking about removing the in-kernel echo cancellation code that has no in-tree users anymore (however, out-of-tree DAHDI can optionally make use of it). See lkml.org/lkml/2025/2/23/416 and the responses for details. I don't think it's critical at all. #retronetworking

Spent some time fighting the Tandberg C60 to play nicely with #asterisk tonight, but happy to report that we got there.

It really _really_ wants to use H323, y'all, and saving certain SIP parameters via the web interface is bugged to hell (like auth?) -- you've got to jump into the CLI and set the parameters manually.

Made tweaks to codec lists on device and pbx, and we have g.722+h263p SIP calls working.

Wrapped it up with a nice custom wallpaper bow.

A picture of a computer display on my cluttered desk displaying the OSD of a Tandberg C60.

The wallpaper is bright and dark reds, with abstract geometric lines, and has the text "SOUTH CENTRAL MCH NETWORK SERVICES" in the middle.

Along the top is an information bar that reads "MCH TelePresence Node", with a Cisco logo, and the current time and date.

@vwestlife #Funfact: In #Europe, #Cband dishes weren't common so #SatelliteInternet used simiar #Tuner cards with #VSAT terminals, usually accepting downlinks from regular commercial #TV #satellites that were just data channels on #ASTRA and/or #Eutelsat #HotBird in the #KuBand...

  • Later they got some fancy "SAT-Routers" that combines a #DVB-S downlink and an #analog #56k / #ISDN modem for uplink if not offered to use #2G #mobile networks as well...

I've got one of those:

Basically a #Router with some #Linux on Ethernet, Power & F-Screw-Connector on the rear, #56k& #ISDN #Modem|s and USB up-front.

  • And yes, I used that to share a #dialup connection with multiple devices, because they can do that!

I really want to get this #Force10 C300 switch into the #HomeLab to play with, but the thing is so damn heavy. Its lived on this cart for like four years now because moving it anywhere else is too arduous.

On top of that is some #Avaya #IPOffice gear, though, and we will definitely be connecting that up to the telephony lab.

Some adventures installing @openwrt@lemdro.id
@openwrt@lemmy.world on a #Google #WiFi "puck" (AC-1304)

If you follow the directions between the links: openwrt.org/toh/google/wifi
and the updated details in this thread
forum.openwrt.org/t/finally-in
you can get #OpenWRT installed on those #Google #Wifi #pucks (AC-1304).

It is a bit of a challenge, since you are flying blind based on the light colors and blinking of the puck; along with the typical poor documentation of open source projects (as typical, written as someone is well familiar with the topic and process, rather than written in a #KISS for the #n00b).

Once installed, you can configure as #repeaters following this tutorial
openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/ne
and the video at
youtube.com/watch?v=Bfmx5NjIWL.
