@dustcircle I am not sure you or the author intended to mislead, but for fair balance, of the TENS OF THOUSANDS of #moth species worldwide the larvae of only TWO species, Tinea pellionella and Tineola bisselliella, eat fabric. The rest, including ALL the moths pictured, do not. Avoiding a tineola infestation is important ... but factual accuracy is important too. #MothsMatter #entomology #nature #wildife #lepidoptera

A Red-tailed Hawk landed in front of us as we were walking in Forest Park and gave us a stern look as if to warn us not to pass. We continued on our path without incident.

A large bird of prey is perched on the jagged tip of a broken tree trunk in the forest. It faces directly toward the camera, with sharp yellow eyes locked in a piercing stare. Its chest is white with bold brown streaks, while its wings and back are darker brown. The sunlight highlights its feathers, giving them a glossy sheen. The background is a blur of green foliage, with dappled light filtering through, and some colorful graffiti faintly visible on a wall or surface to the right. The overall mood is striking—calm but intense, as the bird stands alert and regal in its woodland setting.

On the way back to the car there were Long Tailed Tits, sadly they wouldn’t cooperate and sit still but there was time for one last Robin before the long drive home.

Thanks again for having me @JimsPhotos when you find yourself in Norfolk we should look around my patch.

An Eastern Wood-Pewee spotted along East Pond Trail at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

This is a photo of an Eastern Wood-Pewee perched on a branch, captured at the East Pond Trail in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The bird has a slim, upright posture with a modestly long tail and slightly pointed wings. Its plumage is generally a mix of gray and olive tones, with lighter underparts and a subtle whitewash on its throat and belly. The Eastern Wood-Pewee’s beak is two-toned, with an orange-yellow lower mandible and a dark upper mandible, a typical feature of this species. The background is lush and green. The lighting brings out the details in the feathers and the bird’s alert expression, making it a beautiful and natural setting for observing this species.

Today's view of the Snow Bunting made up for the miss (see earlier post) yesterday before I undertook an Hen harrier roost survey for the RSPB. Good to see @BradyLavis
No ice cream though.

This morning's view out my window was a group of Golden-crowned Kinglets. It is a chilly morning, just below freezing, but the bird activity around the house is the best I have seen in the last couple of weeks.

When I am working in the Catskills, I have a view out the sliding glass doors out to the deck from my computer. This often gives me a good opportunity to see birds out of the corner of my eye, which is always welcome.

Today it was a Brown Creeper with its tongue sticking out, backlit by sunlit fall leaves. My camera was not prepared, so the focus could be better, but the colors are great.

Pretty quiet on the mothing front last night. Almost full moon, clear and slightly cooler night meant less action (... or maybe more action if you saw my previous Sex Lives of a Cabbage Moth post! 😮 )

Just a handful in the box this morning, but these included four beauties:

1) BLACK ARCHES
2) MARBLED BEAUTY
3) MARBLED GREEN
4) DOUBLE-STRIPED PUG

Overhead shot of a 2.5cm long moth called Black Arches. It is triangular. It has a white background with black markings. The top third has just a few black dots. There is then a thick, black, horizontal, wavy, shark-toothed edged band across the middle. A thinner wavy, shark-toothed line runs close to the bottom edge. It has two large, feathered antennae.Overhead shot of a 0.5 centimetre moth. It is arrowhead shaped. It has a jigsaw, marbled, green effect, made up of lots of irregular shapes and bands of quite vivid light and dark green, some of the shaped edged in white. An overhead shot of a 1cm Marbled Green moth. It is arrowhead shaped. It is very similar to the previous marbled beauty moth. However, it is slightly larger and the marbling effect is duller. It is still a jigsaw of random shapes of green creating a marbling effect.Overhead shot of a Double-striped pug moth, about 1 centimetre wide. Its wings are such that if you imagine a burlesque or Spanish dancer with arms outstretched straight left and right, each hand holding the bottom hem of a flowing skirt, so that the skirt fans out in front. These wings are grey-brown with many thin wavy bands and lines running horizontally across. The bottom edge of the wings if fringed. The moth looks freshly pupated and clearly marked.

As well as larger macro moths, there are thousands of micro moths, some barely perceptible to the eye. Four micros from today's moth box include:

1) yponomeuta evonymella (Bird-cherry ermine) [Top Left]
2) argyresthia brockeella (Gold W) [TR]
3) digitivalva pulicariae (Fleabane Smudge) [BL]
4) caloptilia rufipennella (Rufous Stilt or Small Red Slender) [BR]

Professional wildlife photographers .... don't you get at me. I am not a photographer myself, I am not blessed with a massive zoom or impressive tripod. But it's not what you've got, it's what you do with it that counts - and I did it from distance with my little snapper poking out the bathroom window! A photo of a Great Spotted Woodpecker ... a rare but welcome visitor to our garden birdfeeder.

A Great Spotted Woodpecker hanging from the bottom of a wire birdfeeder containing peanuts. He is looking right. He has a bright crimson red head edged in black with white cheeks. A black line extends from his beak to his neck where it joins a thicker black band which runs from the back of his head diagonally towards his breast, creating a Y shape below his cheeks. His back and wings are black but he has a white chest.
