#wilding

The top of our garden, which we affectionately refer to as the wild half, is awash with snowdrops.

It's about half an acre of very old trees (150+ years). Over the years we scattered wild flower seeds and left it to nature.

It was once an old orchard for the house. #gardening #wilding

I quite enjoyed #Wilding an account of #rewilding a farm in #Britain. It was both fascinating and depressing. It was interesting how disconnected many Brits are from the natural world, the opposition to scrub is frankly hilarious to someone currently living in Australia! I was amused to read that beavers have been successfully smuggled into Britain for release more than once (and river health benefited). A weak spot is perhaps that while the costs of the work, the subsidies needed and the impact of agricultural policy since WWII are addressed, the author doesn’t quite recognise the huge inter generational wealth that means they own this land and accompanying castle, nor how they were able to support themselves during the 20yr process. #ecology @bookstodon

I finally started a channel on Peertube - or two actually, the other one, Kirjakanava, is for my Finnish book content. Books & Bugs channel, on the other hand, will mostly be about nature stuff, or that's how I've planned it. But we shall see. I'm baaad at focusing on only one thing in my social media channels. 😀

Anyway, here's my very first video: My Finnish Wild Garden (2025). 🌱

Dear commercial-free anglophile friends, :agummyhug:

On the whole, I am strictly ad-free. I only support Mastodon, #FLOSS, #Anarchists and other #ethical excellence. :mastodance:

I am kinda hardcore #nerd in these matters.

Today I found and have been impressed by the advice and support of a commercial #organic #seed company based in Devon AND have put a link to them on my Ecology page.
mettaray.com/Ecology/
I do not endorse them but have found them kind and helpful. Which is the basic quality I look for. ✅

Please do not slut shame me. I am neither a haw berry, whore or follower seeker. :google_emoji_kitchen_skull_and_tulip_mashup:

Did I do OK? I hope so. I am very interested in #wilding and #organically growing #food. I am also inclined to befriend slugs, snails and dendroaphiliacs.

Ah well, so bee it. Roses and #apples. Bramble and ramble. At least I am not an AI imitation but a real wer-lobster... 🦞

The fireweed in the center pot of the big hexagon melon bed is blooming along with some marigolds.

Pink or purple fireweed flowers. Also known as willowherb by some. They are in a very large planter that is buried in the center of a raised garden bed. There are some orange and red marigolds blooming in the background. The pot also has a tomato plant.

A stunning creeper.. I love when neighboring gardens take on a life of their own, ignoring all boundaries. #Wilding

Roadside wilding apple tree in Wairarapa. Pretty good acid and a little tannin, nice flavour . If I was planning the orchard now I would graft on some scion wood from this bitter sharp. Also a late cropper. Apples holding on well weeks past harvest. Couple of inquisitive cows came to see what I was doing!

OFFICIAL SELECTION | FEATURE FILM

‘Wilding’

Based on Isabella Tree’s best-selling book, #Wilding tells the incredible story of a young couple who bet on nature for the future of their failing, 400-year-old estate. They set to work with their ground-breaking vision, battling entrenched tradition and major forces along the way, daring to place the fate of their farm in the hands of nature.

Ripping down the fences, they set the land back to the wild, entrusting its recovery to a motley mix of animals, both tame and wild. So began a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding experiments in Europe and beyond.

A poster for the movie ‘Wilding’ shows a vibrant green rural landscape with a small English castle in the background, a lake in the centre, and standing in front of a broad stand of tall trees on the left, a large stag stares at the camera in the foreground.

In the middle distance, two small human figures are dwarfed by the vast landscape, as the sun’s rays appear over the horizon.

Bird on a wire. Or rather 30 or so pigeons on one, and three rather stand-offish crows (there's definitely something going on here between the crows) on another. Curious how this meeting of overhead electricity cables has become an ornithological social club.

Yesterday, I cut down a dead ash tree, using branches to add to the ongoing dead hedge that's there to mark the line between the industrial agriculture going on in the field next door and our attempt at a wilding/ rewilding permaculture project.

Looking closely, I'm in awe of the fact that so often in things that seem dead are not quite what they seem, as they give life to other organisms, like these fabulously florescent

Close up on the surface of a dead branch from an ash tree with a background of tiny green lichens and, standing above them, creamy flower-like lichens which look a bit like pancakes, flat in the middle but wavy and curling up at the edges.Close up on a dead ash tree branch with its fine floral and distinctively curly pale green lichens. Like closing-in on a field of flowers. These are easily missed but worth the effort of finding.

On questions of human intervention/management and or , the power and independence of continues to amaze me.

Just over a year ago, my partner and I planted 500 trees and felt very pleased about it. Since then, we are constantly finding volunteer trees which have self-seeded with the help of birds and no help from us. Yesterday, I was amazed to find three walnut trees that I hadn't noticed - amazed because we don't have any walnut trees!

Anyone out there good at identification? 🤔

This parcel of poop was left on the path outside the front door this morning. The creatures big enough to produce something of this size that I know for sure are living in this area of rural France would be foxes, badgers or wild boar, oh and also deer. If anyone can give a steer, it would be appreciated.

Er, is there such a thing as on Mastodon? If not, I think there should be! And here's a fungal moment I recorded earlier.
