Another shot from the film scans I recently got back. Taken at the boatyard where the boat I work on is hauled out for maintenance. I managed to capture the boat in the reflection of the boat-launching truck’s side mirror.

A photograph taken with kodak portra 800 35mm film. The photo captures the round side mirror of a tractor trailer truck used for launching boats, the reflection in which is of the boat I work on, a 40-ft, white-hulled, fiberglass lobster boat. The mirror is black-rimmed and attached to a polished metal arm which protrudes from the truck’s front corner. Part of a gray building with white trim and two green trees are visible but fuzzy and out of focus in the background along the bottom of the frame. The sky is a hazy off-white. The reflection in the mirror shows part of the truck’s cab which is painted a shiny black, and three boats. The middle boat is the one I work on. To the left is one shrink-wrapped in white plastic for storage, and to the right is a much smaller fiberglass boat.

I was so excited to receive the scans of some rolls of film I sent away for processing! The photos date back to this past spring.

Here’s one: The boat-launching truck at the boatyard where we haul our boat out when we need to do maintenance.

A film photo of the cab of a black tractor-trailer truck with the driver’s door open and a person sitting inside with only their arm and leg visible. Their hand is on the door handle. The door appears to be lined with a caramel-colored leather material and there is a crank window lever. The truck appears to be an older model and paint job is a glossy black. While only part of the truck is visible and not much of the surroundings, part of a boat’s bow, another’s stern, and a sailboat mast appear in the background. The truck is used in a boatyard for picking up and launching boats and has a specialized trailer to do so.

Heading back into the harbor, 2021.
Turns out this film stock can experience light leaks in the first few frames due to the emulsion being particularly sensitive, especially if the roll is loaded in direct sunlight. I actually quite like the effect.

A film photo taken from the stern of a lobster boat facing forward. Only the port side third of the boat’s wheelhouse is visible. There are four buoys painted red and yellow tied in a bundle to a cleat on the rail of the boat. To the left of the boat there’s a harbor in the background with many boats on moorings and three small mountains behind. The frame has light leak that gives the whole photo a reddish-pink hue, though the blues of the sky and water are still discernible.

Lobster buoys are sanded and repainted every season. Buoy colors are chosen by each fisherman to differentiate their buoys from those of others. Usually sanding and painting happens in a fisherman’s workshop but on this occasion I sat in my truck bed to sand.

A film photo of the truck bed of a red Toyota Tacoma with five lobster buoys sitting in it. The buoys are painted red and yellow and are in the process of being sanded to prep them for a fresh coat of paint. Various sandpaper and scrubbers sit next to the buoys and there is a coating of paint dust on the back bumper of the truck.

One of the many pieces of public art around the downtown and working waterfront of my hometown of New Bedford, MA. This piece is one of a small collection by @mandyfraserart and is down at the State Pier.

A photograph of public art on a Jersey barrier on the State Pier in on New Bedford, MA's working waterfront. The barrier is painted black, and the artwork is a red fishing trawler made up of multicolored phrases that are relevant to the city, including "scallop trawler", "Buzzards Bay", "fishing", and "New Bedford".

A photograph of the prow of the M/V Cuttyhunk (with only "M/V Cutty" visible), with fishing vessels including the United States, the Santa Maria, the Hera, the Jane Elizabeth, and the Donny C across the channel in the background.

Wishing you all a good start to the week!

Stonington harbor, circa fall 2019. Stonington is the main town on one of Maine’s larger islands and also the location of some of the largest lobster landings in the state.

A photo of a harbor in the town of Stonington, Maine. The photo is taken from a vantage point maybe 15 feet above the water. The day is overcast and the colors are muted. There are many boats on moorings and in the background the town of Stonington with its wharfs and old captain’s houses stretches up the wooded hill. In the foreground there is a white-hulled dinghy with a rounded bow, the inside is painted teal. Moving up the photo, there is a skiff with an outboard, a wooden float piled high with lobster traps, a blue-hulled lobster boat geared up with scalloping or pogie-fishing rigging, then four white-hulled boats to the sides of the frame. Beyond the boats and before the shore there are a few ledges protruding from the water.

Happy Friday everyone! I took an accidental hiatus from Pixelfed because of how busy I’ve become all of a sudden and consequently how exhausted I’ve been. My work is seasonally very intense. In my absence I’ve realized just how much I enjoy being part of the Pixelfed community and I’ve missed seeing all of your lovely photographs. I hope to be back with at least a little bit more consistency.

A film photograph of a harbor taken through a window. The window muntins are out of focus in the foreground and they divide the frame into quadrants. They intersect in the lower right part of the frame and the focus of the image is through the upper left quadrant. There are boats on moorings in the harbor and on the far shore there are houses and a brick building that used to be a sardine cannery. The vegetation is lush and green, the sky is hazy blue and the water’s surface is calm.

Thurston’s Lobster Pound or simply just “The Dock.” Maine’s wharfs are built out above the water on pilings so that fishermen can access them at both high and low tide. Even at low tide a 50-ft boat can pull directly up next to the wharf. This part of Maine has tides that typically fluctuate by 10-12 ft.

A film photo of a wharf on a Maine harbor. It is low tide and the wharf’s pilings are exposed maybe 10 ft. There are stacks of yellow and blue lobster traps and a float connected to the wharf by a ramp with a lobster boat tied up to it. It is sunny and the water is very blue. The space below the wharf is in shadow.
