@FeloniousPunk
Hi! Welcome to the fun fun world of audio on Linux :)
I am an audio eng and use Reaper daw - it's pricing model (freeware+) is awesome, it's super small, insanely stable, and available on win/mac/Linux.
It runs on anything. I still have it running on an xp laptop (called 'Computer 4 ponx'). I've run it on a pi. It will run on anything.
I think it's just about the only non-free software I've ever whole-heartedly supported.
For hardware I mostly go with usb interfaces, and none have ever presented a problem. Once you get Jack audio functioning, the world is your oyster.
I also wanted to mention #yaBridge which along with #wine allows you to use most windows VSTs.
cheers!
