Wine, Proton, and Crossover from allow you to play Windows games on Linux or MacOS.

For music producers moving to Linux allows you to seamlessly use Windows audio plugins.

@m I posted about my previous endeavours a few years ago. I picked #Ubuntu Studio for the supposed no-hassle audio configuration after messing around with Jack & #Pulseaudio in regular Ubuntu, and the low latency I/O. I don't recall specifics wrt whether I needed #Carla or winetricks, but I remember the joy of discovering #yabridge. Most of the setup worked, but I got stranded trying to get the drag & drop part of the #EZDrummer midi clips from the #VST popup into a #DAW like #Ardour & #Reaper working. Cross-application UI interaction is apparently hard to get right with Wine on #Linux. Updating the applications involved later also gave me some trouble iirc.

@phoenixgee @nixCraft I feel you. What DAW are you using? #bitwise #wine #yabridge

#5.1 #surround #SoundSystem and #StevenWilson are simply an amazing combination!
What a great experience to listen to this genius's #music this way!
#SteinbergUR44C #32bit under #Arch #GNULinux as usual.
#ToTheBone #StevenWilson

As a musician, music teacher, and audiophile, I find GNU/Linux to be THE BEST for audio and music production.
Special thanks to #yabridge (https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge)—you have no excuses to keep using proprietary OSs that spy on you!

    middle screen: a file manager displaying the album’s files, with cava running a bar-style audio visualization. An anime illustration made by myself is partially visible in the background.

    right screen: Waterfox browser open to a Wikipedia article about Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson, using dark mode. a sidebar with tabs is open.

@FeloniousPunk
Hi! Welcome to the fun fun world of audio on Linux :)

I am an audio eng and use Reaper daw - it's pricing model (freeware+) is awesome, it's super small, insanely stable, and available on win/mac/Linux.

It runs on anything. I still have it running on an xp laptop (called 'Computer 4 ponx'). I've run it on a pi. It will run on anything.

I think it's just about the only non-free software I've ever whole-heartedly supported.

For hardware I mostly go with usb interfaces, and none have ever presented a problem. Once you get Jack audio functioning, the world is your oyster.

I also wanted to mention #yaBridge which along with #wine allows you to use most windows VSTs.

cheers!

Anyone get Wine 10 yet, does yabridge work ok?

@roymathur
FYI, I hope you'll find pro audio has come a LONG way in the last few years.

I've had EXCELLENT (and easy to obtain) results using #wireplumber. Not much (if any) special junk needed to be done to use any of my usb interfaces. Wireplumber and pipewire-jack have "just worked" on my last few systems. It's fantastic!

Combined with #wine and #yabridge, I can do everything I would do on windows and more, only free and without my data/security/privacy being robbed.

#wine #linux #Yabridge #spitfireaudio

Mildly useful tip for Ardour on Linux users who use Windows VSTs with yabridge: The current version of wine-staging (9.22-1) causes Windows GUIs to stop working in both Ardour and Carla. Downgrading to 9.21 fixes it, so if you haven't upgraded, hold off or ignore it. #ardour #carla #yabridge #vst

@m2m I never tried it, no. I forced myself to use only native #linux plugins and make the best of the limitations I encountered in terms of availability, and I do not regret it.
But I hear good things about #yabridge, so I encourage you to give it a try!
#linuxaudio has become a pretty great experience these days! ☺️

@f_dion Thank you for responding! I had a working setup inn Ubuntu 24.04 with WineHQ's stage repos. After upgrading to 24.10, it stopped working. Yesterday there was an update, I upgraded, and now I can run Windows apps with Wine as before, no problem there. However, #Bitwig still won't be able to load the corresponding VSTs (they worked before). I have done #yabridge sync again just in case, to no avail. I don't know how to debug this problem. Happy to provide more data if you tell me how.

Update # 3

Skipped Waves and iLok in lack of fun doing for today. Tried to get ToneX to work. Got the manager working but installing causes issue in not finding the download folder. I assume some kind of sandboxing (read smth like this in a post).

So still no waves, STL, or iK.

Unfortunately i rely heavily on these. ToneX and STL Libra is a big part of my business model.

DO LINUX SUPPORT IN THE FIRT PLACE FFS!!!

Weekend project. Checking out yabridge and porting win VST to linux. So far so good for natives atm.

next: iLok, Waves stuff. If anyone has experience i'm very open for tips.

Any settings to minimize wine-caused cpu load?

So I copied the windows vst folder to my linux wine vst3 folder, added the path to yabridge, ran sync and Carla sees the Full Bucket Music Drumtraqs plugin. It complains about it but it works. Other plugins I tried didn't work so far.

A native plugin would be best, but at least it works. I can use the real drumtraks, the windows or Mac plugin, or the windows plugin in linux. I think I got all base covered!

@kohan I did have a little fun finding open source JUCE VSTs that were only meant to work on Windows. I can't remember which ones they were now, but I don't think any of them failed to compile on Linux.

Quick screenshot of #Bitwig for Linux and XLN's RC-20 (Win64 #VST3) through #yabridge, running on an LTS kernel with (shockingly on this i7-4500U laptop with 8GB RAM) very little lag.

#Yabridge is the way I run #Windows #VST in #Linux and it supports multiple prefixes, that is to say isolated instances of windows, so once you've got a VST working it's locked in.
