Tuesday was a fine day for walking these pups and training another new hire. We didn't get rained on, and everyone behaved.

I've been reading Wilding:The Return of Nature to a British Farm by Isabella Tree. The Knepp experiment with regenerative land use is much-cited and so I wanted to read about it for myself.

I know #rewilding is a controversial term and concept but I've found it a fascinating read with lots of ideas and evidence about the increased #sustainability and #biodiversity resulting from de-intensifying #agriculture and allowing #nature to regenerate.

All of the rivers on the #Chesapeake watershed feed into the Atlantic Ocean, and at that #estuary, 350 #species of #fish plus #oysters, #clams, and #crabs, rely on that water quality, which is now tainted with pollution and sediment. Plus harmfal algal blooms cause dead zones. Sigh.

Scott McGill believes that #beavers can help clean this all up FOR FREE!

I've been thinking lately about the importance of coexisting with #wildlife in #urban and #suburban areas rather than just focusing on preserving #land in less populated areas.

Richard Conniff makes the point in "Habitat on the Edges: Making Room for Wildlife in an Urbanized World": e360.yale.edu/features/habitat

"Efforts to protect #biodiversity are now focusing less on preserving pristine areas and more on finding room for wildlife on the margins of human development."

Buffer zones, easements, corridor protection, planting for pollinators--there are so many ways to work with #wildlife instead of against it.

Not to mention the health benefits to humans of access to nature, which is a key aspect of #environmentaljustice.

#OTD Leonhart Fuchs, #German #Botanist, is born.

The cover of his #Herbal #Masterpiece, #HistoriaStirpium, has a Holly #Tree w/ a #Coffin in its #Branches - the mark of the printer Michael Isingrin. The coffin makes a #Cross & represents life's journey from birth to death. #Holly symbolizes eternal life & is the #Evergreen twin of the #Oak.

Leonhart described 100+ new #Plants like #Pumpkin, #ChiliPepper, #Corn, & #Squash.

The genus #Fuchsia is named in his honor.

Leonhart Fuchs Portrait by Heinrich Füllmaurer, in Tübingen, 1541. This is the most famous oil portrait of Fuchs. He has a flat black hat, a fur stole, and a dark beard.Closeup of a Fuchsia with its showy pendulous flowers in shades of red and purple to white. The hanging growth habit led to the popular name ladies' eardrop.Closeup of the cover of Leonhart's book with a coffin in the branches of a tree - a printer mark of the printer Michael Isingrin. The image of the casket in a tree forms a Christian cross, and the tree holding the coffin was a Holly. The depiction of a Holly tree was deliberate; it symbolizes eternal life. Botanically speaking, the Holly tree is regarded as the evergreen twin of the Oak. Thus, the coffin in the tree represents the journey of life from birth to death - the perfect image for an herbal.Closeup of a perfect pumpkin with a long stem curling out and away from the pumpkin.

Former wetland restoration tech chiming in on fears I'm seeing going around on climate change:

-Please listen to Indigenous leaders/researchers in your areas. I wish Drs. Jessica Hernandez (jessicabhernandez.com/) and Lydia Jennings (nativesoilnerd.com/) were on here, but their books & research are a great starting point.

-There's so much local action going on, from free government trainings/support to groups protecting species or parks. Pick a topic, and join in!

@justjessicaok not just Midwest #soil. Just about everywhere that “modern” agriculture is practiced. To the extent possible, we need to switch to #NoTill #regenerativeagriculture with #covercrops and practices which build soil and soil health rather than erode it.

Activists have set up camp for almost two days now in Aalistunturi to stop a forest from being logged by Metsähallitus. Their story has received a lot of attention from around the world! The police visited them and ordered the activists to leave, but they did not.

The Minister of the environment, Maria Ohisalo has also criticized Metsähallitus for logging the area. The activists demand that Metsähallitus stop logging in the area and ask that the Ministry of the Environment accepts the protection proposals.

Seeds have become quite expensive in recent years so saving our own seeds as much as possible is a huge help. But, it's important to know which plant varieties will produce viable seeds. Starting with heirloom organic plants is the way. Learning how to save seeds is a long study with good books on the subject. Here is a new organic seed company in Canada with a nice variety. I haven't ordered from them yet, but will this year to try them out.
